The service has installed a prescription drug drop box in the front lobby of its five police stations to accommodate the safe and anonymous disposal of unused and unwanted prescription medicines at any time. Local pharmacies are also encouraged to participate. For the past two years, Halton police has participated in the National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day (PDOD), seizing more than 65 kilograms (143 lbs.) of unused and unwanted prescription drugs. As the PDOD only occurs once a year, Halton police says members of the public stockpile medications in anticipation of disposal day. In addition, local pharmacies often collect and hold on to returned narcotics until the PDOD, leaving them prone to internal theft or a robbery, say police. So, police have gone to employing an allday, any day dropoff program. "Every home has half-empty prescription pill bottles tucked away in a cabinet, never to lice release.
