Angela Bruce IODE celebrates 70 years The Angela Bruce Chapter IODE is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The notfor-profit organization was chartered on June 16,1933. It was named after Angela Bruce, the wife of a Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. The Chapter's celebration includes presenting $27,500 in scholarships including the Merrian Keegan Award. $8,000 over four years; $1,000 bursaries to 15 local double cohort high school graduates: $2,000 each to four adult female students at Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, plus $500 to a Sheridan music student. The Chapter's original membership was 24. During the ensuing years there have been 37 regents or, as they are now called, presidents. Today, Wendy Kato occupies that office and the Chapter has 69 members. The original location of the IODE Opportunity Shop was on Oakville's main street in Oakville (1944) and since March of 1990 it is on the comer of Kerr and Rebecca Streets. During the Second World War its goal was to raise funds to purchase socks and sweaters for the men and women in the Armed Forces. The Lome Scots Regiment was adopted and furnished with phonograph records and books. During WWII other' organizations were also supported by the Chapter, such as the Women's League; the Red Cross; the Royal Canadian Legion and the navy ship HMCS Oakville. Today, this store is the main source of the Chapter's funding. The entire mem bership takes turns volunteering many hours at the shop. Used clothing and household articles are sold at very rea sonable prices. The shop is open week days from 12 - 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Currently, revenue from the store is returned to the community through edu cation, bursaries and donations. Angela Bruce Chapter supports many projects within the Oakville community, such as awarding bursaries every year to gradu ating students in each of Oakville's sec ondary schools and to adult students at White Oaks Secondary School and Sheridan. Among others, the Chapter also supports Sleeping Children Around the World. Ian Anderson House, DARE. CNIB, the Salvation Army, SENECA, Fareshare Foodbank and other local charities. The chapter also makes generous contributions to the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. In recent years the club's other fund-raising projects were target ed towards specific institutions. This year's proceeds from the annual Bridge-Luncheon will go to the Lions Foundation's Dog Guide Training Centre.
