A 4 - The Oakville Beaver. Wednesday A p ril 30, 2003 Clean up volunteers look forward to day they won't be needed By Craig MacBride SP EC IA L TO THE BEAVER Thanks to moreUhan 7(X) volunteers co-ordinated by the O akville Community Centre for Peace. Ecology and Human Rights. Oakville is a clean er town today. For the 12th year in a row. Oakville residents celebrated Earth Week by showing up at specified sites to pick up garbage left behind through the year. Lisa Seiler, a board member at the Community Centre, was staffing the sign-up table and garbage drop o ff at Lions Valley Park and said that, ideally, a year w ill come when the centre does n't need to head up the event. " It's really nice to come to a park like this and see it free o f litter. People are saying 'i t 's a lot nicer than last year.' so maybe people are getting the mes sage and not littering in the first place." Approximately 30 volunteers signed up to pick up garbage at the park, from couples who happened upon the event while spending the day in the park to a G irl Guides troop that planned their hike to coincide with the event. Carol Fraser and Tamara Arnone, guide leaders fo r the 18th Riverglen G irl Guides, were happy for the oppor- This aerial shot taken by W ard 4 C ou ncillor A lla n K lg ar shows a pattern in the tree-cutting that took place on an envi ronm entally sensitive woodlot 011 the O a kville -M ilto n border. Aerial shots prove eye-opener at Town Council (Continued from page A 1 ) The couple has not spoken publicly about their intentions for the property, which falls outside o f the boundary o f the area being studied for future north Oakville growth. Calls placed Tuesday by the Oakville Beaver to the landowners were not returned. When the cutting was discovered by Conservation Halton staff, following a pubic complaint, the property owner reportedly said he was clearing the trees to create agricultural land in order to receive a reduction in his property taxes. But Ward 4 Councillor Allan Elgar, who rented a plane last week to take aerial photos o f the site, suggested a g o lf course looks more likely from the clear-cut pattern than a farm. Others around the council table agreed with his assessment. " This issue is o f great concern to. I'd say, 99 per cent o f the people o f O akville." said Mayor Ann Mulvale. "W hen you see it from the air. it really disputes the submission that the person was cutting for agricultural purposes." The clearing o f the mature Carolinian forest with excavators has killed about 40 acres o f trees and destroyed valuable bird habitat. Peter C. " We're saving the future and the animals," the guides said, thrilled that they could help and impressed by the odd finds, which included beer bottles, shoes and a lawnmower. There were also an amazing number o f socks in the forest, inspiring Fraser to conclude that Lions Valley is where socks end up when they disappear from the washing machine. Including Lions Valley Park, there were, according the community centre. 30 sites across Oakville, an amazing number considering they began in 1991 with one site, the QEW overpass at Bronte Road. W ith the numbers still being tallied, it's not yet clear whether Oakville w ill retain the title o f nation's most success ful cleanup campaign, an honour, bestowed on them by Earth Day Canada, that they have held since 1997. Rita Doyle and her husband Pat were working hard at Lions Valley, dragging everything from pylons to deteriorating sleeping bags from the forest. " We live in River Oaks," Rita said, "and we walk these trails all the lime. 1 wish more people would do it regular ly. It should be a daily thing." Nothing down, put your money away!
