PETROCANADA D ear Neighbour: W hile the power outage which swept across O n tario and parts o f the northeast U nited States has no do u b t had an im pact on your daily life, it has also created difficulties for the Oakville Refinery. Sudden power loss to a refinery creates significant challenges. O u r employees were able to quickly and safely shut the facility down. We are proud o f the pro fessional and capable m anner in which our employees conducted themselves. Bringing down a refinery suddenly requires the use o f an elevated flare, w hich you likely noticed. T his is a norm al and safe part o f the emergency shutdow n process. However the visual effects from the flare can be quite noticeable. W e w orked diligently at m inim izing the im pact to the com m unity and w ithin a few hours o f the power outage, the smoke from the flare was reduced. W e thank those w ho called the Environm ental Line at the tim e o f this power outage. O u r call centre was w ithout power for 24 hours and it was difficult to receive and call back those w ho requested calls in a timely manner. W hile this refinery has been in operation for m any decades, we understand th at we are part o f the com m unity and recognize the responsibilities that com e w ith being a neigh bour.
