Bruce Ireland, CEO o f the YMCA of Oakville, had a vision a goal to have the best qualified and trained YMCA staff and volun teers in North America. Over five years ago. the YMCA started work ing toward its goal by hiring an outside training consultant to develop a set of training programs that would carry the organization through the transition to an expanded location which they knew was coming up soon. The result was a set of eight modules called "Y Stars". These modules cover a wide variety of areas, including: Orientation, Service. Sales, S.A.M. (Serving Annual M embers), Teams, Communications, Supervision and Management. All staff and volun teers are required to complete the eight modules of training within their first year with the Y. Beyond the Y Stars program, other training opportunities exist for Y staff and volunteers, ranging from CPR and First Aid to Com puter Training and Time Management. An example of the Y's dedication to training is its recent commitment to development of the new Pilates muscle conditioning program. Lisa Newman, Coordinator o f Group Fitness, trained in the Stott method ology of Pilates for four years and hundreds of hours before undertak ing certification. She chose Stott training and certification because it is recognized worldwide as the high est level of certification for Pilates. Newman's significant education in Pilates helped her to understand how Pilates is unique...the pos tures and the exercises are univer sal, but we are not all the same so how we modify the exercise for each individual is very important." Newman enlisted her supervi sor, Jeanette Heywood, to also become certified in order that two instructors could work together in one class. Newman said, "I don't think one person has the capability to teach this class because it is such an individualized discipline." The YMCA of Oakville is com mitted to the training and education o f its staff and volunteers. Call the Oakville YMCA at 905-845-3417 for information on volunteer opportunities or the new Pilates program (starting on Sept. 30). Staff and Volunteer Training and Development at the Oakville YMCA, commented that ..."the YMCA has invested considerable time and dollars in training.
