That's not to say that her art isn't wonderful, but that her peanut butter cookies are extraordinary; they melt in your mouth and they weaken your knees. They are a work of art, worthy o f a place on the many art-covered sur faces in Giroux's house. Many o f those pieces in her house were created by friends, but most o f the work is her own, created over the many years she's been work ing. This isn't Giroux's first show either -- far from it. Being an artist since the age of 10. the 74-year-old has been a part of 19 shows, group and solo. She has studied at the Montreal Art Gallery, Ecole des Beaux-Arts, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Edmonton Art Gallery and the Ontario College of Art and Design. Her work covers the spectrum o f artistic experi m ents, from straightfor ward, though captivating landscape paintings to the weaving o f the plastic bags her Toronto Star arrives in every morning onto a large frame. She also works with soapstone and wood, chip ping away at the materials to find simplified faces. It is the variety in her work that keeps her interested. "You progress, it's a chal lenge," she said in her eclec tically decorated house, which she shares with her husband of more than 50 years. "You mature and you try other things." It would seem that Giroux has tried everything. Back in her days at-the Ontario College of Art and Design, she worked \*ith stained glass and still u ^ s the stained glass hanging lamp she made in her final year. She also works with found objects, as part of the Broken Fence Society group of artists, such as corks and juice tins, as well as those Toronto Star plastic bags. Giroux spends two days per week teaching at Sunningdale Public School. She's also a member of Visual Word, a group that paints based on poems brought in by members, as well as numer ous other groups, including the Oakville Art Society, which will be hosting her show. The exhibit continues to Oct. 1, and is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The OAS is at 560 Bronte Rd.
