The Oakville Beaver, F rida y S e p te m b e r 19, 2003 - 7 Flynn - Education (Continued from page 3) Franklin - Quality (Continued from page 3) Our plan also guarantees that within our first maihdate, 75% of students will meet or exceed the provincial standard on province-wide tests. We will also legislate mandatory learning until age 18 so that an immature decision to drop out of school early won't ransom a young person's ability to earn a decent living as an adult. But the most important educational change, in my opinion, will be the promotion o f excellence in learning for all Ontario students and the can cellation o f tax breaks for exclusive private schools. The Harris/Eves government, by accident or design, has created chaos in Ontario's education al system. A vote for Ernie Eves and the Tories will maintain status quo funding and neighbour hood schools will continue to close. The Liberal Plan for Change calls for a reinvestment in our children's education with a new funding plan that will allow more schools to remain open. I made tough decisions as Chair of the Oakville budget committee and kept taxes down as a mem ber of a fiscally responsible Town Council for the past six years while proactively planning for our town's future. I am running as a Progressive Conservative because our party's platform, The Road Ahead and the leadership of Ernie Eves, will foster tRe enhanced quality of life that I have worked for in Oakville. Lower taxes for all taxpayers, includ ing seniors, mortgage interest deductibility, a commitment to more doctors, nurses and hospi tals, continued attention to high standards in our education system, and a continuation o f fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets, and job creation - all of these measures will make Oakville an even better place to live and raise our families. As your MPP, I will work tirelessly with you to ensure that our community continues to offer a quality o f life that is the envy of cities across Ontario. What is to be done? The PC Government has leased the 407 for 99 years. The company pos sessing ETR 407 is a profit hungry investor, ever increasing the toll higher and higher, so making the use of 407 prohibitive to common drivers, who are going to Hamilton and beyond on the 403. In my opinion something can be done by a concerted action of people o f Oakville, City Council, Provincial Government and Political Parties. The solution is to press ETR 407 to charge zero toll for traffic entering 407 at Trafalgar / Dundas, exiting at Hamilton and vice versa. It is my personal observation that a minimal traffic goes to 407 from 403 at Trafalgar / Dundas, so the loss to ETR company from this concession will be miniscule. On the other hand, it will earn huge goodwill of the people of Oakville as air pollution in Oakville from QEW gridlock will be mini mized. A by-pass for Oakville will be achieved, as all unwanted and unnecessary traffic bound for Hamilton, Niagara and USA will go straight through 407, instead of merging with QEW, at the beginning of Oakville. If I am elected by the people of Oakville, I will devote my full energies to this problem, the solution of which will minimize air pollution in Oakville and ease transport flow, making life for Oakvillians a little bit easier.
