BARRIE ERSKINE OAKVILLE BEAVER I Cabin Fever calendar fun, sexy and in good taste By Wilma Blokhuis OAKVILLE LIVING EDITOR Flying at 35,000 feet, where the air is thinner, who can blame a group of (light attendants for becoming a little light headed? And, perhaps a little giddy, daring and risque? Perhaps they were suffering the effects of cabin fever - too many high altitude miles in the close confines of an aircraft. Their idea, the source of much laughter, fun and frivolity, was to cre ate a `little bit nude' calendar. Ironically, this group of Air Canada flight attendants are women in their 50s, proving that posing almost naked is not just for the young. After the laughter of such an idea subsided, the idea became very serious. It was decided the calendar would be a fundraiser for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation for cancer research. Thus, the first ever Cabin Fever Calendar Girls calendar for 2005 became a reality - just in time for Christmas. Filled with fun, provocative and slightly risque photos, some obscure tidbits of airline history and trivia, the colourful calendar aims to raise $100,000 for Princess Margaret from the sale of 5,000 copies at $20 each. The calendar, a project of a group of friends, "celebrates mature women who are full of life, laughter and love," states its introduction. "What fun we have had together exposing (literally) our vulnerabilities and, in some cases, our fantasies. We laughed until our sides hurt. "For those of you who may on occa sion have been roused from your nap on one of our flights by the sound of raucous laughter at the back of the air craft as we shared our innermost joys and secrets, our apologies," states the calendar. It shows the women doing their jobs - with a twist of the fanciful, like serving wine topless, swearing a Mrs. Claus suit and lying breasts partially exposed on the wing of an aircraft, to having a large number of sexy under wire brassieres in one's hand luggage enough to trigger an inspection at cus toms. The photographs are tasteful, taken over a two-month period by Kay Woollam of Oakville, a flight attendant and photographer. She donated her expertise, as did all of the women involved with this project. Woollam is one of two local women involved with the 2005 Cabin Fever Calendar Girls project. The other, Brenda Stuart, `bared it all' - almost for the camera as Miss December. " I felt like a celebrity for a day," laughed Stuart of the experience. "It was a lot of fun. The girls were very cre ative - the energy was really there. " I had a good time, had a few laughs, and its for a good cause." Stuart, a flight attendant for 35 years, said she got a call one Saturday morning asking if she would be willing to pose for the calendar, "and I said, `Sure.'" Her husband sees a calendar "as a lark...just fun...for a good cause. "A lot of people have cancer and have died from cancer, and the most money we can raise the better. All of us volunteered, and for all of us, the major reason for doing it is to raise money" for cancer research. Stuart appears in two 2005 calen dars. The other is a fundraiser for her church, Maple Grove United. "Our hus bands took our pictures," she contin ued, adding, "We were more fully clothed." Maple Grove sold 2,500 cal endars for $25 each to raise money for renovations. "Our hand bell choir did it - there are 12 girls in the choir. "I did two calendars in six months," concluded Stuart of her two `15 min utes of fame.' The 13 volunteer 'models' - the cal endar starts this month - were pho tographed in their various poses at Buttonville Airport north of Toronto, using private luxury aircraft. `Two of the 'models' are cancer survivors. " It's my first calendar," said Woollam, a flight attendant for 31 years and a photographer for the last decade. " I specialize in photographing people - kids, families, weddings and babies" plus a few landscapes. "Lately, I've started photographing teenagers at graduation, not the traditional gradua tion pictures, but candid shots captur ing a teen's personality." For Woollam, the .calendar project was an opportunity and a challenge. "All of us (involved with the calen dar) have had friends and family who have battled cancer, and when I was asked to do the shooting, I thought it would be a great opportunity to give. When you have an opportunity to do something about it, you grasp it. "All of the money from the sale of the calendars will go to Princess Margaret for research...research in general. "All of us have friends who have had all kinds of cancers so we decided not to limit ourselves to raising money for just one type of cancer research."
