Peace makers honour the gift of helping others and pass it on continued from p.5 "As a culture, we tend to isolate ourselves," McCallum said. "We get to build our community when we get to hear each other's story." Working with the homeless has helped change perceptions, Cade said. "When they get to know these people, they realize in most cases it's not a choice to be on the street. A lot of them have been forced out of their homes or have mental health issues. But they're human beings," he said. "You see a shift from we're up here and they're down there to being on the same level." Elizabeth Robertson was awarded the adult peace medal for her commitment to peace and social issues. "My parents showed me what we can do for others," Robertson said. In 2003, Robertson founded the Peace and Justice Club at St. Thomas Aquinas, helping students get involved in a number of local and international causes and become engaged members of the community. "It's impossible to not feel the energy of 150 kids willing to do good things for others," Robertson said. The youth peace medallion was awarded to Vienna Micallef Del Mastro. Del Mastro runs fundraisers each year to raise money for the Oakville Milton Humane Society and Ninth Life Cat Rescue. She encouraged everyone to adopt a pet and "make their family bigger by one member." The Grade 5 student at Fern Hill School's Oakville campus said we can't expect to live in a peaceful world where animals are mistreated and we must stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. "Animals are the most bullied creatures on the planet," she said. "I will not stop defending my friends until they receive the respect they deserve," said Del Mastro. Logan Dewsbury was also honoured for his fundraising work for the MS Society of Canada, an organization he was inspired to help because his mom has multiple sclerosis. oakville to In Receive 50 FREE litres of U Fill Water and we'll also give you a FREE jug to transport your water!
