Town salted the roads as taxi companies' phone lines jammed continued from p.1 Local taxi services, such as Oakville United, were inundated as all 12 lines were tied up with customers' calls. Dispatcher Linnaea Hutton said it's unfortunate people could not get through. "It was basically like a New Year's Eve where you constantly have people on hold," she said. "When you go to the airport, instead of taking an hour, it was taking us three hours," said the dispatcher. The majority of the main roads were cleared by 11 p.m., but further cleanup went through much of the evening. The Town deployed 20 salter units to local and Regional roads, and an estimated 700 tonnes of salt was applied. Environment Canada Meteorologist Geoff Coulson told the Oakville Beaver the bonechilling temperatures are expected to taper off as quickly as they arrived earlier this week. "There is a bit of a thaw expected and temperatures are actually expected to rise fairly notably as we go through the weekend," he said. "By Saturday, for Oakville, we're forecasting a high of five degrees, which is pretty much around where we should be for this time of year." The warming temperatures are tied to a low-pressure system coming out of Texas that will move towards the Great Lakes Sunday through to Monday causing periods of rainfall, Coulson said. "For those areas north of us in the Snow Belt areas... and most specifically in Buffalo, that obviously is going to be a cause for concern," he said. "They're going to want to get those storm drains opened up for the melting snow and the rain that might be coming as well." In a snowfall event, Oakville residents are reminded to check the Town's website for information on closures and cancellations, as well as updates on the snowplow tracker and other winter operations. The Town's primary and secondary roads, such as Trafalgar Road or West Oak Trails, are plowed first after it snows. Residential roads are only cleared once snow accumulation reaches 7.5 centimetres. To report a weather-related concern, residents can call Service Oakville at 905-8456601 between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. during the week. The Town's snow information line can also be reached after hours at 905-815-5999 between 4:30-10 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. 7 | Friday, November 21, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A STEP BEYOND IN CARE Do you have: Salima Kassam Reg.
