Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton have established Homework Clubs for students in Grades 3-5 in 12 Oakville schools. Through the program, mentors assist students with completing assignments, studying for tests, teaching organizational skills, building confidence and cooperative skills. The mentors are adults or high school students and two school staff members supervise each club. Mentors must complete a three-hour volunteer training session where they're instructed on topics such as learning styles, communication and dealing with difficult behaviour. The Homework Clubs meet after school for 90 minutes once a week. High school students acting as mentors can apply the time toward their community service hours. Schools needing mentors are St. Joseph, St. James, W.H. Morden, Abbey Lane and Mother Teresa. The United Way of Oakville, the Oakville Community Foundation, the Ron Joyce Foundation and community partners such as Glenn Graydon Wright LLP support the Homework Club.
