W e d n e sd a y June 4, 2003 - D 3 Buzz playoff drive culminates in Sunday triple header After winning three of their past four games, Oakville's Junior B lacrosse club finds itself in the midst o f a tense playoff drive for the first time in the club's three year history. The Buzz topped arch rival Halton Hills 10-9 in their recent meeting and followed up with a 14-4 pasting of Gloucester (Ottawa) at Maplegrove Arena and a hard fought come-from-behind 8-7 road win against the Scarborough Saints to briefly grab first place in the South East Division of the Eastern Conference. On Saturday, the Buzz traveled five hours down the 401 to the Akwesasne Reserve (on an island in the St. Lawrence River between the States and Canada) where they dropped a tough game 13-9 to the Lightning in front of 500-plus fans. As a result the Buzz are now second, tied with Halton Hills, one point behind leader Mimico in their division. This Thursday, the team goes up Trafalgar Road to Halton Hills for the rubber match with the Bulldogs. With six regular season games left, this is a very big game for the franchise. Assistant captain Andrew Kingston wouldn't say it was do or die but stated "this is our biggest game o f the year." Veterans Jeff Brownlee and Joel Leveille have both scored 19 goals. On Saturday night Brownlee was picked as play er of the game with a fivegoal performance against Akwesasne. This Sunday (June 8). the Buzz will be participating in the Ian Anderson House annu al fundraising run. as they have for the last three years. "The team takes part each year to help do what we can to raise funds for the six-bed cancer hospice on Winston Churchill Blvd. and to give something back to the spon sors and fans from Oakville who support us," said Buzz veteran Geoff Farrer. Captain Reid Westmacott points out that the Buzz have always been connected to this cause through Buzz director Bud Donovan and his son, former Buzz coach Bruce Donovan, who both support the hospice. "Anyone who wants to pledge can get in touch with any Buzz player." said captain Westmacott. After the run, the Buzz are taking part in a unique lacrosse double header at Maplegrove arena. This Sunday (June 8) the Buzz take on the defending Canadian Junior B champion Oshawa Green Gaels at 2 p.m. At 8 p.m.. the Burlington Chiefs Junior A club (the 'A' club affiliated with the Buzz) take on the defending Ontario champion and Canadian jun ior A finalists. St. Catharines Athletics. Fans can see both games, and watch a midget game between Oakville and Burlington at 5 p.m., all for only $8. They started off the current campaign last Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field in Oakville in their same old intimidating fashion, blasting die visiting Markham Raiders 63-0. It marked their 23rd straight win in NFC play, setting yet another league record. "No matter what the score is, I play hard every down." said Rinella who has been with the Homs since 1998. "We never give up. and we're like a tight family, so this record is very special." Other Longhorn firsts include rookie coach Pat McNemey enjoying his first win, and rookie Dion James getting his first Longhorn touchdown. The tone was set early in this home opener when Chad Kennedy recovered a fumble, which led to Colin Grant's first touchdown on a 20-yard pass. Derwin Phillips also scored the hat-trick with three touchdowns. Other touchdowns were added by Rick Andrade and Chad Kennedy. The `Homs led it 35-0 at the half. "There are a lot of rookies this year, and with a new coach, it is a learning process," said McNemey. The `Homs are in Oshawa this Sunday for a 2 p.m. game and back home at Bronte Athletic field Saturday. In Friday's opener, the Tour team edged Motor City Rollers 3-1. Oakville broke open a 1-1 tie on a pair of goals by Cam Foley, the final one into an empty net. Jeff Brownson opened the scor ing. The Mavs dominated the Black Biscuit Devils in a one sided contest to win their sec ond game of the tournament 10-3. It was a strong team effort which saw goals from all players -- two each from Alfred Lee, Neil Musselwhite and Tyler Legein. with singles contributed by Tyler Gardner. Cam Foley, Bryan Carey and Jeff Brownson. The final game of the qual ifying round saw the Mavs stalemate strong NARCh contender Team Easton 4-4 in what would be a preview of the quarterfinal match. Oakville led most of the way but couldn't hold leads of 3-1 and 4-2 despite outstanding goaltending by the M av's Scott Brownson. Oakville goals were scored by Jeff Brownson (2). Tyler Gardner and Neil Musselwhite. With four teams at identi cal records in the first round, the quarterfinals set up a re match with Team Easton. Although Easton did get the lead in this game, 1-0 and even 2I going into the final period, the Mavs had a great third period to win 6-2. Tour defenceman Luke Tresham and goalie Scott Brownson were at their best, shutting Easton out while goals by Jeff Brownson. Tyler Gardner (his second of the game) and a hat trick by Neil Musselwhite gave the Mavs the win. The semifinal turned out to be the game of the tournament with the Mavs unable to hold on to a 41 lead to be edged 5-4 by NARCh favourite Metro Storm. Metro moved on to win the final 9-1. Cam Foley and Neil Musselwhite potted a pair each. Based on their performance, the Mavericks were selected for the NARCh Championships in Florida in late July.
