Brown votes against missile defence motion By Craig MacBride SPECIAL T () THE BEAVER When it come time last week to vote on a Canadian Alliance motion supporting the U .S. mis sile defence program. Oakville M P P Liberal Bonnie Brown voted with her conscience and not her party. Going against the majority of party members. Brown joined 37 other Liberal backbenchers in sid ing with the new Democratic Party and the Bloc Quebecois in voting against the Canadian Alliance motion on June 3. Contacted in Ottawa by the Oakville Beaver, Brown said she was unhappy with the wording of the proposal that stated support for "giving N O R A D responsibili ty for the command of any system developed to defend North Am erica against ballistic mis siles." The inclusion of the word `any' proved to be the stumbling block for Brown. She feared its inclusion could lead to support of the future weaponization of space. Despite her objection, the motion carried with a vote of 156 for and 73 against. Despite her split from the party line. Brown said does not fear any reprisals, adding that the seriousness of voting against the party is exaggerated by the media. Brown said Defence Minister John McCallum has made it clear Canada would not take part in the ballistic missile defence program if it involved the weaponization of space. Follow ing the vote. McCallum told reporters "the government was broadly in support of the theme of the Alliance motion, and so supported it." He added the government remains opposed to weapons in space. The ballistic missile defence program would rely on orbiting satellites to detect missiles fired at North America, allowing land and sea based interceptor missiles to shoot them out of the air before reaching their targets. Even with more tuned word ing. however. Brown said in a telephone interview that she wouldn't support the motion, fearing the establishment of "Fortress North America." "It's the reversal of policies and institutions that have worked well since World War 11." she said. " I fear it could lead to anoth er arms race." O akville federal Canadian Alliance candidate Glen Herring, on the other hand, believes being part o f the missile defence shield from the beginning is of great importance. " If there's to be weaponization of space, it's something you want to have a say in." said Herring. "There's a lot of debate going on. and we're not going to be part of the debate if we're sitting on the sidelines." Herring added he's not sur prised by Brown's vote against the motion. "She's basically been on that side of the agenda consis tently." he said. "She's made a lot of anti-American comments."
