"They were very well-received." After a year of chemotherapy and radiation, cancer returned for Towey in December 2012, when she was diagnosed with metastatic (recurrent) breast cancer. "I had two choices: chemo every three weeks for the rest of my life or palliative care. After seeing the devastation of my husband's treatments, we, at the time, decided on palliative care, which seems to be working," said Towey, who is currently in a palliative care program at Credit Valley in Mississauga. Towey's husband, Dan, died last year after aggressively battling oral cancer in 2006 and then lung cancer in 2008. After returning to hospital in February for a follow-up appointment with her oncologist, Towey said she noticed the free hats given to cancer patients were "still very unappealing." "I thought someone should do something about that, because if you are losing your hair, you should have something swanky to wear. And it turns out that someone was me," she said of why she began to donate the caps to Credit Valley. And it turns out that someone was me. I didn't know what to do with the money at first, so I put it all in a box. Now, it has started to accumulate and 100 per cent of the proceeds are going to the (Canadian) Cancer Society. Dorothy Towey Oakville resident "Dorothy started making these amazing knit caps for cancer patients that have lost their hair due to treatments. We thought they were super cute, so we started buying and wearing them at the salon," said Kathy Kovacs, co-owner of The White Room. "What started as a few of us wearing Dorothy's hats at our salon has turned into a fundraising event for the (Canadian) Cancer Society. "We have sent out a newsletter to our clients and have sold a total of 47 hats but are hoping to reach many more to really raise some decent money." The one-size-fits-all caps are sold for $25, and headbands for $15 -- both are available in cream, grey or black, with flowers or buttons. "I can't thank Kathy and the staff at The White Room enough, for all their support," said Towey. "They have shown me through everything I have been through, their salon is like a hug and haircut, and their clients are treated like family always."
