The new 11-member board elected its chair and vice-chair for the next year at Wednesday's inaugural public board meeting for the 2014-18 term. The meeting began with the oath of office and allegiance in a trustees swearing-in ceremony performed by Justice Peter Lauwers in front of a rare capacity crowd packed with family and friends of the trustees. Elections then took place with Oakville's Kelly Amos and Burlington's Amy Collard selected to resume the roles they had held for the last year under the previous slate of trustees. Amos is back as the board's chair and Collard the vice-chair, each for a one-year term. Kelly Amos Amos, a trustee since 2000, defeated Collard in the election for the chair's position, as she did in 2013. Collard, a trustee since 2010, then threw her name in for the vice-chair's role and beat Milton trustee Donna Danielli in a vote. None of the six new trustees decided to vie for either position on the all-female board. The exact voting results of the secret ballot were not revealed, as is the board's custom. In her nomination speech at the start of Wednesday's meeting, Amos said there remain many challenges facing the board including upcoming employee contract talks, pupil and accommodation reviews, French language programming pressures, facilities upgrades and controversial occasional teacher hiring legislation.
