The two-sport play initiative between the largest clubs in their respective sports in Canada will provide specialized scheduling and a subsidized pricing structure for girls in the under-4 to U8 age groups who play hockey and soccer. The new program will begin with OSC's summer outdoor registration Jan. 12, 2015, and continue into the Hornets' registration season beginning in late spring. OSC executive director Dave Harris, who believes this initiative between two community sports associations may be the first of its kind in Canada, said youngsters and their parents often have to make a choice between the two sports before they receive their schedules. "I hate that kids have to make a choice. I just want the kids to get out and play," Harris said. "It's all about physical literacy." Hornets president Mike Turczyniak agreed. "To see kids in Hornets uniforms, great. If they're in a soccer uniform, great. "I also want people to recognize you can play more than one sport. It's probably healthy to play more than one sport. If we can get that message across the community, I think it's a win for all of us." In addition to the two-sport play initiative, the OSC and Hornets' technical departments will work closely to develop those who coach female play- ers through presentations and practical applications for both sports. Details related to the various components of the partnership will be released in the near future for all initiatives presented. "Maybe this will work with other (associations) down the road," Harris said. "The Hornets were really receptive.
