Two months prior to that, in a similar vote count, council agreed to wait eight weeks to get more information about environmental studies after Ward 2 Councillor Fred Oliver called for the referral to staff. After that original post ponement. four developers filed appeals with the OMB. Most o f the official parties with standing at the hearing are developers who are seeking approval from the OMB to build on the land. After the vote. Mayor Ann Mulvale said Oakville must decide the future of north Oakville, not the OMB. and called OPA 198 "a made-inOakville solution that puts the environment first." To not take a position Mulvale said, would be "sailing into waters fraught with all sorts of misfortune." The 100-member Residents' Association North o f Dundas (RAND) welcomed OPA 198 as protection of their homes, invest ments and futures along Burnhamthorpe Road, where they live in the middle of the subject lands. Despite passage of OPA 198, development won't likely occur in north Oakville for at least five years. When it does, further Official Plan amendments, including secondary plans, com plete with public input, will be required. Just hours before the May 31 decision.
