The Halton Regional Centre audito rium was tilled with more than 300 peo ple eager to hear Martin speak at the informal, free appearance. Dressed in a maroon golf shirt and khaki pants, he received a standing ova tion when he entered the room and was swarmed by people who wanted to shake his hand. Ward 1 councillor Kevin Flynn, who w ill be running as O akville's Liberal candidate in the upcoming provincial election, pointed out that 50 years ago that weekend former Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent gave a speech in O akville, the first national leader to do so. Making the connection between St. Laurent and M artin was premature though, as Martin admits he 'till has work td do to beat Sheila Copps and John M anley for Jean Chretien's job. The well-documented rift between Chretien and Martin was the driving force behind the M artin's speech, as he tried to separate his candidacy from Chretien's decade-long reign, even though Martin was Finance Minister for nine years of it. " It's not about looking hack but looking forward." Martin told the audi ence. going on to state that his prospec tive leadership w ill be "the first new mandate of a new Liberal government." and not the fourth mandate from the current Liberal government. If Martin becomes leader, that new mandate w ill be a big one. if his speech is anything to go by. Calling this time in Canada the most important since the end of the Second World War. and claiming that though the economy is hurting as a result of forces outside, not inside. Canada. Martin said " there is a time when a country can punch above its own weight." W ith more solid social programs, an economy second to none and an under standing of the global village, Martin has constructed " a vision in which Canadians take control of their own des tiny." Oakville Liberal M P Bonnie Brown was pleased with Martin's speech, espe d aily his acknowledgement of her as "one of the foremost speakers on foreign affairs." Though she hasn't decided which leadership hopeful to back. Brown says that M artin's appearance in Oakville "shows that he recognizes that Halton. though not the biggest region in Canada, has a reputation as a community that works." It is also a community that consistent ly votes Liberal in federal elections, and it is a riding that Martin would like to win. Sounding like a football coach of an underdog team Martin exclaimed. "N o longer do we have to take a backseat to anyone. We can take on the rest of the world and win. We are a country that's going to w in." Soccer players at barbecue Three members o f the Canadian National Women's Soccer Team w ill be in O akville Thursday evening as guests o f the Law Enforcem ent Special Olym pics Barbecue. O akville's Kara Lang and Diana Matheson, plus Burlington's Melanie Booth, w ill be at Pine Glen Park during the event which runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The park is located on Third Line south of Dundas Street. Halton Regional Police and Car Quest have partnered to host the barbe cue. w'hich w ill help support the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. At any given time there are 11.300 Special Olym pic athletes training and competing across Ontario. The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olym pics is a year-round fundraising and awareness program that collects 25 per cent of all Ontario Special Olym pics revenue. Lang. Booth and Matheson w ill be travelling to Montreal this weekend to attend a national league training camp, which includes a pair of games against B ra z il's national wom en's team.
