Hobley -- the survivor of a horrifying accident on Aug. I, who was left in critical condition after being trapped in a burning car that was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer on the Q EW -- was on hand to thank those who rescued her and to inspire the new grads. " I wanted to see everyone who saved my life," said Hobley. " I 'm speechless. This is a day I 'll never forget." When she made an appear ance at Oakville's In Harm's Way church service in September, Hobley spoke from a wheelchair. At Friday's ceremo ny at the Oakville Training Campus for Emergency Excellence, she walked with a cane, but was in an ebullient mood -- especially since it marked the first time she met two of her saviours, construction workers Ilidio Catarino and Carlo D'Angelo. Hobley hugged them both Crash survivor gets chance to thank rescuers during the formal portion of the ceremony, then lingered with the pair following the event, posing for pictures and thanking them for their efforts. D'Angelo and Catarino, how ever, remained humble in the face of all the praise from Hobley and firefighters alike, although the day in question cer tainly left its mark. " It was an incredible experi ence," said D 'Angelo. The collision occurred when a tractor-trailer travelling eastbound on the Q EW collided with the rear of Hobley's Cavalier and rammed it forward beneath a cube-van. The impact caused the Cavalier to erupt into flames. Grads ready to take on challenge Oakville s six newestfirefighters are prvud to serve By Howard Mozel O A K V IL L E B E A V E R S T A F F When Oakville's six newest firefighters started their first-ever shift on Monday they did so with all the blessings and faith of the Oakville Fire Department behind them. That was made clear last Friday at the Oakville Training Campus for Emergency Excellence dur ing the graduation ceremony for Mark Acocella, Fabrizio Biagi. Anthony Ingarra, Tiffany Smith, Man Stainton and Patrick Tallon. " You can make a difference and you will make a difference," said Halton Regional Police Chaplain Rev. Hans Hamer. " I'm proud of you." For Smith, all the long hours, hard work and intensive learning - not to mention showing up for hockey smelling like smoke - culminated in this " long-awaited day." " As I stand here now wearing this new uniform, it seems a little surreal," said Smith, who explained that their training was filled with " challenges, tri umphs and way too much fun to call this work. Oakville, here we come!" Smith's family members, who drove from Barrie for the ceremony, were equally delighted. " I 'm so proud." said Smith's mother. Korleen. " This is the fulfillment of a dream for her." Chief Training Officer Richard Craibbe, who told the graduates "This is your day," also explained to them that their training is anything but (See Six' page B2) Barrie Erskine · Oakville Beaver Ilidio Catarino, left, and Carlo D'Angelo helped rescue Karan Hobley from a burning car by using a crane to hoist a cube van off the woman's Cavalier. jgR I DAY AT THE SPA Or.
