Interestingly, Aquinas did have another Grade Nine player actually start that provincial game, and she was another twosport player. Her name -- Kara Lang, of course. A busy fall in which she starred for the Canadian women's soccer team at the World Cup, however, precluded her from suiting up for the basketball team. After Aquinas' first silver medal, they were losing veter ans like Donovan, Juzenas and Salem, yes. But they were also coming back with Zmirak and Lang as Grade 10 players. Hardly what you would term rebuilding. Next year's team will have a more tenuous link to the dynasty, but still coach Giammicheie cautions not to write them off. " Seven of those girls who were so strong in this program are not going to be there next year," he agreed. " But we still have two girls (Holly Quinn and Alex Yurichuk) who are quite good from that team (coming back), as well as one of the top junior teams." " Maybe provincially we won't be as strong." He thinks the school might finally act its size for a change and stick to double-A. " And if we go double-A our goal w ill be to get to O FSA A in double-A. That's our team goal." The school, this year, opted to go triple-A and not at the relatively new top quad-A level which O FSA A instituted for the province's biggest schools (and any of the smaller ones who care to compete with them). Aquinas didn't have the slightest doubt that, even without Lang in the line-up, they could compete with the best of quad-A. In fact, as coach Giammicheie noted, they defeated St. James who went on to win the quad-A bronze medal. It was getting there that was the problem. And in the end, the Aquinas brain trust were made < o look like geniuses with their decision to go triple-A. That's because the quad-A final, which was also held this past weekend, was an all-Hamilton Roman Catholic final won by St. Mary's 40-33 over St. Thomas More. As those who follow Halton high school sports know, the road to O FSA A for Halton teams always lies through the Hamilton Roman Catholic champion. In short, had Aquinas gone quad-A, they would have faced a Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (G-HAC) door-die game against the eventual quad-A champion St. Mary's. Which is why they hedged their bets and decided to go triple-A. Although Aquinas couldn't get revenge in the triple-A final against Governor Simcoe, a team they had lost to earlier in the season by three points, they did manage to settle anoth er old score in the semifinals with their 52-34 defeat over #3 ranked Holy Cross of Kingston. Zmirak was game-high scor er with 22 points). "They (Holy Cross) defeated the girls last year in the quarterfinals so it was kind of like a good revenge game for us. " We were up for it obviously. There was a lot on the line and we did well." Other top scorers for Aquinas were Sergautis (13) and Dillon (II). In the quarterfinals, the Raiders defeated Ottawa St. Peter's 65-47. Zmirak had a game-high 25 points followed by Dillon (16). Mueller (10) and Yurichuk (6). Aquinas breezed through the preliminary round 60-43 over Eastern Commerce (Zmirak 21. Dillon 10. Quinn 6, Mueller 6 and Yurichuk 6) and Martingrove 69-29 (Zmirak 21. Dillon 11, Mueller 8, Sergautis 8, Yurichuk 8, Silva 7, McKenna 6). RAIDERS: Krista Sestokas, Andrea Sergautis, Karen Zmirak, Holly Quinn. Nina Joy Mueller, Cheryl Silva, Alex Yurichuk. Sarah Dillon and Katie McKenna. COACH: Mike Giammicheie. 4 P age F ly er in <z\o !
