www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, December 12, 2014 | 12 continued from p.4 If it is a short appointment, he waits. "I know where all the Tim Hortons are," he says. Otherwise, he or another driver will come back later. Around noon, he made a couple of short trips in town, providing a ride home and taking Red Cross volunteer driver `feels satisfied' at the end of the day another client to an appointment. At 3 p.m., he picked up a woman who has been visiting her husband at a Mississauga nursing home and was back in town to shuttle a client to a chiropractor appointment, finishing his day at 4:30 p.m. Latter said he enjoys meeting the people he provides rides for, and always looks forward to seeing his regular passengers. "It's a serious thing, but we have a lot of laughs," Latter said. "For some, it's the only outing they get besides doctor's appointments," Handojo said. "It's nice for them to have someone to chat with." Handojo noted schedules can be tailored to suit the driver. Some don't drive in the summer, others don't drive in the winter, some do mornings, some do afternoons, some drivers prefer to stay in town, others like the longer trips. "We're pretty flexible," Handojo said. Volunteer drivers must be at least 18 years old and have at least two years of driving experience and fewer than three demerit points. The Red Cross provides emergency first-aid training. Rides are provided between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, and volunteer drivers who use their own cars are reimbursed 36 cents per kilometer. The Red Cross also has four of its own vehicles, including two vans that are wheelchair accessible, that volunteer drivers can also use. Latter said as long as he has a licence, he'll drive."When I'm done," Latter said, "I'm satisfied I've done something good for the day."
