Emerging Photographer of the Year award for Oakvillian Oakville photographer Lora MooreKakaletris was recently honoured with an award in the Robert McLaughlin Gallery's RMG Exposed Juried Photography competition. Moore-Kakaletris was given the CIBC Wood Gundy Emerging Photographer award. "I am beyond words," she said. "It is an honour to be selected Emerging Photographer of the Year." As a result of her win, Moore-Kakaletris' work will be on display at a solo exhibit in spring 2015 at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. In addition, her image titled Andreas was awarded best overall submission, and her photo Cotton Candy Clouds placed in the top eight. More than 300 photo entries were submitted, of which 50 were exhibited and auctioned at the RMG Exposed show on Nov. 22. The event provides an opportunity for emerging and national photographers to gain recognition for their works. Born in Toronto, Moore-Kakaletris is the oldest of four children. She was 12 when her mother died and says it played an integral part in her inner journey to use photography "as a way of expressing her inner-most feelings and vulnerabilities." In 2008, she decided to leave the world of occupational therapy, working exclusively with children, and pursue her career in photography. Moore-Kakaletris lives in Oakville with her husband and two sons, who are often subjects of her photography. She is also an active volunteer with children's charities such as The Gold Hope Project and Oakville's Gabrielle's Ride. Her photographs has been exhibited widely and she has received numerous awards and recognitions from International Aperture Awards, OCC Oakville, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and CPS Inkworks: Joshua Creek Art Heritage Centre.
