High school sailors converge on Oakville on Sunday If you looked o u t on the w ate r on S unday o ff B ronte H arbour you w ould have been am azed to see 94 sm all b o ats ta k in g p art in th e O n ta rio H igh S ch o o l C h am p io n sh ip s h o sted bv the B ronte H arbour Yacht C lub. Five classe s o f boats took part in the o ne-day reg atta that saw three races run u n d er the su p erv isio n o f the O n tario S ailin g A sso ciatio n an d the host club. W hile the w eath er fo recast for the day co n tain ed ev e ry th in g that a sa ilo r d read s -- rain, heavy w ind and even w atersp o u ts -- the day began w ith b eautiful su n shine and ju s t the rig h t w ind to test the sk ills o f these y o u n g , but ex c ellen t sailors. Tw o races w ere run u n d er d elig h tfu l co n d itio n s and the th ird had a little m ore w ind and cloud, m aking it slig h tly c o o ler but still accep tab le. P rio r to the reg atta on S aturday the O n tario S ailing A sso ciatio n ran a sk ills/train in g session for the sailors w hich featured o n -lan d in stru ctio n and alm ost four hours o f o n -th e-w ate r p ractical training. At the b arb ecu e fo llo w in g the regatta, aw ards w ere p resen ted to the top three finishers in each categ o ry and sev eral teen s from O ak v ille w ere p ro m in en t in the m edals. F in ish in g second in the L aser (one sail) categ o ry w as C a m L y m b u r n e r from B lakelock and also from the sam e school in sev en th place in the L aser II class ( tw o sails) w ere O liv e r D a rro c h a n d E v a n T a il, a co u p le o f u p -an d -co m ers. T he third place fem ale in the Byte class w as J o a n n e P ro k o p from A ppleby C o lleg e (also from the host club). It is in terestin g to note that the first boat, o v erall, in this class w ith an alm o st equal rep resen tatio n betw een m ale and fem ale sailo rs w as sk ip p ered by a girl from S arn ia nam ed K atie A bbott. As expected, he thought the team 's youth w as apparent, som ething he had talked about going into the season open er. "They (Cam bridge) are an older team. They play with more confidence because they've been there before and th ey 're ju st a little bit quicker in their decision m aking process and you can see that. "A nd w e have to take our tim e to do that. T he only way you can go through this is by playing and getting that criti cal experience. You ju st can't say. okay, now I'm going to be quicker and m ake better decisions.
