To that end, he outlined the Liberals' "safe schools" position, which includes anti-bullying program s, optional surveillance cam eras for school entrancew ays and a School Safety Hotline. "W e have a responsibility to our stu dents and our parents that you are safe," he said. D uring the q u estion-and-answ er period, one student asked w hat the Liberals would do to deal with escalat ing tuition costs. M cGuinty said fees w ould be frozen immediately and that an assistance program for O ntario's 16,000 neediest students w ould be implemented. "If you do well, we do well." he said. M cGuinty's "straight goods" on the issue o f taxes included no tax cuts for the sake of investing in "what benefits us all." Yip. the school's current prime minis ter. made his comment Tuesday during a visit by Ontario Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty - the only party leader to accept the school's invitation to speak. "We would like to sincerely thank Mr. McGuinty for taking time out of his cam paign to speak to us," said Yip. "It really shows his concern for the generation of tomorrow." McGuinty's appearance was met with cheers and applause as more than 1,000 students looked on. "He is going to make a difference," said Grade 11 student Radek Meljon. Others maintained that the student body as a whole is sick of having to deal with the loss of education due to school board altercations. `Teachers should have a voice, and if not, they should take action," explained Yip. who strongly opposes banning teacher's strikes. Other students complained of dealing with more than 30 bodies per class, which makes it hard for them to get personal learning space and time. McGuinty displayed a strong concern to this issue and said one of his goals as premier o f Ontario is to reduce class sizes to 20 students or less per teacher. The lower teacher-to-student ratios pleased Jessica Locke and Jenn Edwards, both members o f the Loyola student coun cil. Many students also liked the idea of freezing tuition fees, seeing as it will directly affect them in the near future. B E lng l b o L ite ra ry S w a n Bookers Bookstore. 172 Lakeshore Rd.
