The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 1, 2003 - A7 Candlelight Ball fundraiser will help Gastrointestinal Investigation unit By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVEH STAFF The 12th Annual Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) Candlelight Ball should not only shed rays o f hope for reduced waiting lines, but added patient comfort to the hospital's Gastro-lntestinal Investigation (GI) Unit. The annual fundraiser to be held this year at the Burlington Convention Centre on Nov. 8 is expected to result in several new pieces o f much-needed equipment in the newly expanded GI Unit. All proceeds from this year's gala will go to the GI Unit. Gastroenterologist Dr. Sudhir Pandya has been practicing in Oakville for nine years. He has an office in the Reynolds Street Medical Arts Building and works at the OTMH GI Unit with three other gas troenterologists. Until Oct. I. the OTMH GI Unit was a 'wo-rnom unit with three gastroenterolo gists. This monb. a third room opened and a fourth gastrouitcrologist began work there. Four surgeons also work in the unit that could see upward o f 5.000 annual pro cedures. The GI Unit deals with patients, who have upper bowel complaints like heart burn. indigestion, ulcers, those who vomit blood or have trouble swallowing. It also handles patients with lower bowel disorders like bowel cancer, inflam matory bowel disease. Crohn's Disease, colitis and rectal bleeding. Upper bowel disorders can often be investigated through the mouth and small intestine, while lower bowel disorders are often investigated through the large intes tine. Three pieces o f equipment to help in these investigations are being sought at the Candelight Ball. A duodenoscope worth about S45.1XX) should help in the diagnosis and treatment of complaints like jaundice, gall bladder and pancreatic disease. A new cautery unit, known as an ERBE Unit, is also being sought. This piece o f equipment is worth approximate ly $22.(XX)-$25.(XX) and is what Pandya calls a "sm art" unit manufactured in Germany. O f leading-edge technology it can determine things like tissue resistance, when it comes to cutting and cauterizing. and has the ability to utilize attached units like the argon plasma laser that can be used to treat surface lesions, explained the doctor. Pandya said the unit is essential in every GI Unit room and is used to treat bleeding ulcers, bowel polyps and to cau terize biopsies. "It is an essential unit and every room that does a procedure should have one." said Pandya. noting OTMH s new third GI Unit room needs this piece o f equipment. A new colonoscope worth $42,000$45.(XX) is also needed at the GI Unit. This tool is used in lower bowel investi gations and can be inserted through the rectum with what Pandya calls conscious sedation rather than the anesthesia required by an operating room (OR) pro cedure. "Patients can recover more quickly and don't have a big scar on the belly." said Pandya. The physician is also able to watch the investigation via a TV screen type moni tor and has the flexibility to move the equipment up or down or side to side dur ing the procedure. New technology can also make the newer units far more com fortable for patients, said the doctor. It along with the cautery unit is used for biopsies or to remove polyps. Since equipment must go through a sterilization process and could suffer a breakdown. Pandya said several pieces of extra equipment are always welcome. Currently, the third GI Unit room needs a cautery unit and there's no back up for the duodenoscope. Pandya said OTMH has managed to get good service from its exiting equip ment. even though it has been in use longer than the expected five-year life cycle. For the GI Unit doctors, new equip ment means they can't better do their job. To patients it will mean easier access to treatment, more efficient treatment and less waiting time. "We do outpatient procedures in the great majority o f cases. Twenty years ago, bleeding ulcers would have been treated in the OR." said Pandya. Tickets to the Candlelight Ball cost $275 per person. $2,750 for a table o f 10 and $3,250 for a table o f 10 with corpo rate recognition. O T M H 's largest fundraising event, the ball raised more than $115,000 last year. Tickets include cocktails, a threecourse gourmet meal, a silent and live auction, a raffle and dancing to the Russ Little Band. For information call 905-338-4351.
