A2 - The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday S eptem ber 17, 2003 Transportation Minister says success has caused growth problem (Continued from page A 1) increasing inter-regional transit options and the potential for widening the QEW. "Another option is to Ux>k at the ques tion of widening the QEW." said Klees, adding. "I'm convinced that it is inevitable and that we'll really have to look at it as one of the options," he said. Franklin said voters are supportive of the Tory campaign and vowed to achieve the "ideal" of "keeping Oakville Tory blue." Klees looked back to 1995 when he said jobs were being lost, unemployment was high and interest rates were double digit. The Oak Ridges MPP said the very people who benefited from the Tories' "difficult decisions" since 1995. are now apathetic and admitted his government is in a "horse race" hoping for a third-time win. Klees said when Premier Ernie Eves was the Finance Minister he took over an $11 billion deficit in 1995 and achieved a balanced budget. He said Ontario has reached such a state of prosperity that if the province was an independent country it would lead the G-7 nations in economic growth. "We have a growth problem here because it's a great place to live," said Klees. The Tories have announced plans to invest $10 billion in transportation, and $750 million into transit over ten years. "Oakville will have its fair share of it," promised Klees, adding the Ontario gov emment expects the federal government to match its $750 million investment in tran sit and that the government also expects municipalities "should be there as part ners" when it comes to funding transit. During the luncheon at the Oakville Holiday Inn Select Hotel and Suites. Franklin's campaign chair Stephen Sparling announced the event had raised Liberals blast negative campaigning (Continued from page A1) told the crow d at Julia, the new Downtown Oakville eatery by restaura teur Julia Hanna. One key ingredient to success, said Sorbara. are candidates like Flynn, whom he praised for his commitment during 18 years on Town and Regional Councils where he could, have continued quite effectively. Instead. Sorbara continued. Flynn possessed the courage to take the next step. "W e're delighted with the campaign here," he said. In addition to selecting prime candi dates like Flynn, Sorbara said Liberals province-wide have "worked until our fingers are down to the bone" to create a com prehensive, costed and intelligent plan for Ontario that lives within taxpay ers' means. "The plan we have for Ontario is very well thought out." said Sorbara, who added on a personal note that the negative campaign the Conservatives arc running is an "embarrassment" to former Tory Premiers Bill Davis and John Robarts. The Eves/Harris track record for the past eight years is similarly shameful. Sorbara continued, especially during recent economic high times when public services have reached an all-time low. Instead, investm ents in infrastructure from healthcare to education should have been made for the "bad times." "This province can be the leading econom y in North A m erica,' said Sorbara. $ 10,000.
