The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 12, 2004 - 39 Tourney hardware for top peewee team The Oakville Hornets peewee AA girls hockey team has been busy this season compet ing in tournaments around the GTA and further afield when not competing in their regular season schedule of games. On Valentine's weekend the squad took to the ice in Sarnia and came away with a silver medal, playing six games in three days. After a slow start the girls ended up finishing first in their round robin pool with a record of two wins and a loss. They defeated Kitchener 4-0 in the quarterfi nal game. They then advanced to the final with a thrilling early Sunday morning come-frombehind overtime victory over the Blue water Hawks in the semifinal game. The Hornets then lost 3-0 to the London Devilettes in the tournament final. The following weekend, Feb 20-22, saw the Hornets competing in the Durham West Lightning Tournament. The Hornets finished first in their round robin pool with a record of two wins and a tie. The semifinal game on Sunday morning went down to the wire with the Hornets notching a winning goal with 37 seconds left in the game to cement a 2-1 victory over the Whitby Wolves. In the tournament final, the Hornets edged host Durham West Lightning 2-1. Over the two tournaments the girls played 11 games and compiled a record of 8-2-1 The Hornets offence of Dayna Newsom, Darcy Breakey, Krysten Bortolotti, Shannon Werstroh, Libby Burgess, Erika Iosue, Kristin Maton, Natasha Fryer and Chelsea Young com bined for a total of 20 goals over the 11 games while the defence of Erin Beaver, Hayleigh Cudmore, Caroline Murdoch, Jessica Gagner, Brooke Kotack and Ellen Brandt combined with goaltenders Nicole Paniccia and Brittany Aldworth to limit the opposition to 14 goals and earn two shutouts. The peewee A A team is now preparing for the league playoffs and the provincial champi onships in late April. The peewee AA Hornets earned gold and silver medals from their last two tournaments. Oakville wins series over Burlington The Oakville Rangers novice AAA hockey team advanced to the second round of the OMHA playdowns last Thursday evening blanking the Burlington Eagles 3-0, to take their best of seven series 4-1. The Rangers will now take on the Welland Tigers for the chance to go to the OMHA Tournament of Champions in April. This should prove to be an excellent series as the two teams finished a point apart in the regular season. Here's a recap: Oakville 3, Burlington 0 (game 5): Oakville got on the board on the first period on a one-timer by Danny Beaver off a perfect pass from linemate Kristyn Capizzano. Sustained pres sure finally paid off for Oakville in the third period with Cole Cassels scoring from Cole Taylor and Kevin Guzzo. Connor Stack then added a little icing on the cake and the series with 13 seconds to go on a timely line change, as he jumped off the bench, grabbed the puck just over centre and waltzed in all alone and deked the Eagle goalie to make the final 30. Picking up the shutout for the Rangers was goalie Jake Smith, who was rock solid all night long. Cudos must go out to the Rangers stalwart defensive corps of Austin Kosack, Brenton Chilton, Kamil Tkaczuk, Sean Perichak Luke Shiplo and Greg Campbell who were tremendous the entire series and gave the Eagle forwards very little room to operate. Oakville 4, Burlington 2 (game four): Oakville shook off a 1-0 deficit going into the second peri od to build up a 4-1 lead, en route to victory. Luke Shiplo had a pair of goals with single markers to Danny Beaver and Kristyn Capizzano (jamming in a rebound off a dazzling rush by Oakville defenceman Greg Campbell). Matthew Kaslik was excellent in net for the Rangers and made several eye catching glove saves. Burlington 2, Oakville 1 (game three): Luke Shiplo scored the lone goal in the penalty filled affair, assist ed by Kristyn Capizzano. Oakville 4, Burlington 3 (game two): Oakville shook off a 1-0 deficit after just 18 seconds to forge a 3-1 lead after the first period, en route to victory. Goals were scored by Conor McGlynn, Kevin Guzzo, Kristyn Capizzano and Cole Taylor. Assists went to Brenton Chilton (2), Cole Cassels (2), Danny Beaver, Cole Taylor, Guzzo and Capizzano. Anthony Scalia led the Rangers with two goals while call-up Peter Ranieri knotched two assists. Patrick Marsh had the other tally. Also earning assists were Robbie Lucciantonio, Scott Benzoni and Michael Baird. With two games left in the season the Rangers have high hopes of solidifying their hold on fifth place.
