7 D 2 - The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday N o vem b er 12, 2003 Sizzling weekend for Blades The Oakville Blades were definitely hoping their torrid weekend play would extend into theii; provincial junior A game last night (Tuesday) against the host Streelsville D erby's. It went beyond our press deadlines. The Blades had a jam m ed schedule over the weekend with three gam es and won them all -- 6-5 at hom e Friday night against G eorgetown Raiders. 3-1 on Saturday against host M ississauga Chargers and 42 on Sunday against host Milton IceHawks. Especially satisfying was Friday night's win. handing league leading G eorgetown their first loss of the season (20-1-1). T he 17-5 B lades host Hamilton Red Wings (17-41) Saturday, 6:45 p.m. at Ice Sports Oakville. The Blades' Steven Pinizzotto and this G eorgetown player leave behind quite the ice storm in provincial ju n io r A hockey action Friday night. And Loyola, win or lose, was going on to their next triple-A step o f playing Blakelock today for the right to represent Halton at the triple-A level. As mentioned earlier, both Loyola and Blakelock had won first round triple-A playdown games against Holy Trinity and Nelson, respectively. The Halton playdowns, that everybody is used to. had no bearing on these parallel tripleA playdowns (other than seeding). Just to make things more complicated, Oakville Trafalgar has com e back into the pic ture, despite being upset in the quarterfinal by unheralded Acton (6-4), because there is a vacant second position in Halton at the quad-A level (besides Georgetown). It is somewhat fitting, in that Oakville Trafalgar created the second vacancy for this area, so to speak, on account o f their being the quad-A defending champs. So. they play today (Wednesday) at the home o f the Hamilton Catholic champion. All teams in action should be competitive today (Wednesday) because the Volpe Division was very competitive at the top end. Georgetown, as you would expect, was in front at 10-0. Loyola. Blakelock and Oakville Trafalgar were all tied at 8-2. It should be very interesting at Loyola today (Wednesday). They beat Blakelock twice but a third straight win can be tough. On the other hand, they are at home and usually have a vocal cheering section. Oakville Beaver Oakville Trafalgar juniors also won four tournaments (Continued trom page 01) Have Soccer smarts? U nder the tutelage o f long time coach Maria Seto. w ho coached the quad-A senior boys last year, the new generation Red Devils looked every bit ready to take over the torch as they dominated the first set. O -T opened up a 3-0 lead and the closest Notre Dame would come after that was 5-3. The Red Devils then went on a match-high, nine-point run for a 14-3 lead. Hiccups, however, did start appear ing in the Red Devils' machine-like efficiency. Notre Dame started battling for some points and they roared into life with a six-point run that made it 22-14. It may have been too little, too late to matter for the first set. But it may ju st have given them the momentum they needed to take the second set and get right back in the game. The early going was back and forth with Notre Dame in front 3-0 and O-T fighting back to lead 10-7. Notre Dame, however, leapfrogged ahead 11-10 and never gave up the lead after that. The closest O -T would come was within two, at 18-16, but then Notre Dame pulled away to build up their biggest lead o f the game, at seven points, at 23-16. O-T regained their com posure in the third set, building up unassailable leads o f 4-1 and 9-2. "It w asn't our best match." said Red Devils coach Seto. "The first game we pretty much had everything under con trol. "The second game, I think the kids got a little bit lazy and sloppy. But the other team played much better, they started to attack the ball, they gave us much more difficulty, they served a few tough serves, we made some mental errors. "At this age, they can easily lose a game here and there." She felt confident going into the third set. " I felt if they played to their poten tial in the third game it wouldn't be any problem, that they would get back on track and start making the right moves." In the end, she w asn't com plaining about the result. " It was a good game. I like tough games. I like going to three. I think it shows good character. "W e've won a lot o f tournaments where w e've done that. T hey're able to com e back and regroup. That shows character." Besides their undefeated regular sea son, O-T burned up the tourney circuit. They suffered a close loss at the E.C. Drury tournament to Sinclair from Whitby. "T hey're a very strong team ." said Seto. Otherwise they won tournam ents at MeMaster. Durham College. Waterloo and their own. Notre Dame also had a great year, winning the Grimsby tournament, in which they only dropped three sets, and only dropping four sets at the E.C. Drury tournament. "Both teams were undefeated throughout the entire season so obvi ously one o f us had to go hom e in sec ond place -- unfortunately it was us." said Irish coach A ndrea Martin. "We played O -T during the season during a tournam ent and we split so we knew w hat we were up against. "I'm very proud o f my 14 players."
