Indoor farmer's market offers a `different' winter escape The long cold winter often means the end to outdoor farmers' markets, but Terra has been helping to buck that trend with its annual Terra Winter Market. The third annual market will open Jan. 10 and will run every Saturday until March 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Milton greenhouse at 12800 Britannia Rd. The fully-enclosed, heated space gives local farmers and artisans a place to call their own during winter, said Terra marketing and communications co-ordinator Blair Lawrence. "Basically it's a one-stop shop for grocery shopping and there's a couple of wineries this year as well," Lawrence said. "It's the biggest one yet. In fact, we noticed there was a huge demand from vendors to be a part of it." The indoor market serves as a chance for people to escape winter, she added. "People will want to come in to imagine it's summer," Lawrence said. "It's a different escape." With 50 vendors, the market features baked goods, produce, meats and cheeses. It includes specialty foods like smoked fish, cocktail bitters, honey and wine. The market also hosts a series of artisans. Lawrence said this year's market will have an urban market theme with seating areas where visitors can enjoy funky, urban designs and an assortment of plants. There will be painted barrels, street signs, decals on the floor, and more to create an urban ambience. "The greenhouse environment lends itself to a warm and sunny climate on cold winter days," she said. Three years ago, Terra decided to start the market in support of local businesses and farms. Lawrence said the intent is to help promote healthy lifestyles by providing the community with a connection to the local food producers over the winter months. It also provides social opportunities for people to connect with neighbours, friends and acquaintances in a comfortable and fun atmosphere, she said. Flu outbreak over at OTMH by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 186 Morrison Road | 905-.844.3432 | crescentnurseryschool@hotmail.com www.crescentnurseryschool.com The brief influenza outbreak at OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) is over, and all nine patients who came down with flu-like symptoms have recovered, says Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) and the Regional Public Health Department. There was concern in mid- December on the Medicine 4C ward, one of the largest impatient wards in the hospital, when a longer-term patient became ill with Influenza A. Eight others also came down with similar symptoms in under a week, which led to an outbreak being formally declared on Dec. 17 -- and HHS implementing its Infection Prevention and Control action plan. Dr. Neil Raul, HHS' medical director of infection prevention and control, called the outbreak an "anomalous event" for the hospital. However, with no new cases reported as of Dec. 21, visiting restrictions that had been put in place ended on Christmas Day. HHS continues to monitor patients and staff for any respiratory illness. Patients, volunteers, staff and physicians, family members and visitors are reminded not to visit at the hospital if they have a fever, cough, cold or feel unwell. flyers. coupons. deals. savings tips.
