And we hosted Christmas Day celebrations, so that was a party. Oh, and we hosted a New Year's Day brunch, so, well, that was a party. Sensing a theme? Anyway, the vacuum died an ignominious death at some point between parties, the apparent victim of a clogging combination of dog hair and pine needles. Next up was the dishwasher, overcome by Guest Contributor overuse. So we took to sweeping oors and Christmas and New Year's and so we had no washing loads of dishes by hand, if you can shortage of time to get into all kinds of ter- even imagine. ri c and tiring trouble. At the end of each day we'd collapse in our beds, feeling -- to employ a term coined eons ago by a friend -- "deliciously tired." And within seconds we'd be socializing with the Sand Man. Trouble was, through the entire holiday, I had this wacky thing going on wherein I'd Performing and Visual Arts School Extended Hours available on request - Ages 3-14 wake up at 5 a.m. and be so unbelievably wide awake, I'd just get up and start my day. And yet our house continues to live in the past -- still festooned with the festiveness of Christmas Past, still looking like it's ready to receive more guests even while remnants of the last wave of revelers remain. Which is to say that we seem to have lost the ability, certainly the inclination, to engage in a thorough post-holiday clean-up, to get the decorations down and properly proceed with this crazy little thing called 2015. We had a wonderful holiday. My wife's ofce shut down for the full stretch between Andy Juniper Performing & Visual Arts March Break Camp March 16-20, 9am-4pm Explore Art, Music, Drama & Dance Not to make the holidays sound like a clockwork combination of entertaining and insomnia. No, we also binged. Not on food and drink, although there was plenty of both, but, rather, on television. Suf ce to say, we lled considerable downtime with considerable Downton. Downton Abbey, that is. I know, I know, all that enormous streetcred and cool that I've cultivated over the years, is now out the window with that lone lame admission: that my wife and I watched, became addicted to, and overdosed on a British period drama. For the uninitiated, Downton Abbey follows the triumphs and travails of the aristocratic Crawleys and their servants from the time of the Titanic to the mid-1920s. Wellcrafted, beautifully photographed, critically acclaimed, with superb performances by an excellent cast. But make no mistake, at its ambitious heart this show is one big, bold, oldfashioned soap opera. A soap opera with enough dazzling distractions to keep my wife and I from possibly ever getting around to taking down Christmas and actually earnestly getting on with this crazy little thing called 2015. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www.facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www.twitter. com/thesportjesters.
