However, there are a few lessons for homeowners, too. First, safety must be number one! We dealt with two types of water intrusion in Burlington: sewage backup and overland flooding. Did you know that flood waters and raw sewage are categorized the same way? Both are considered "grossly contaminated" Category 3 water. Flood waters can come in contact with all sorts of hazardous material, such as heavy metals, pesticides, animal waste, solvents, PCB's, and other toxic substances. Risks from sewage include hepatitis, tetanus, blood-borne pathogens, etc. I saw people walking around in this stuff wearing shorts and flip-flops, because they didn't want to get their clothes dirty; the clothing is to protect your body. Which is more valuable? Next, as homeowners, we all have the responsibility to take care of our homes in a timely fashion. I saw people lose coverage because they waited too long before starting the cleanup, leading to preventable, secondary damage. After letting a smelly, sewage-soaked carpet sit for a week, chances are it will turn mouldy. All insurers will pay reasonable emergency expenses for covered losses. Talk to your insurer to understand your policy, but don't put off your responsibilities, regardless of your coverage. Finally, make sure you have enough coverage. Most people had no idea what was actually involved in providing these services safely. Our staff are highly trained and certified according to international standards. Yes, we augment our workforce with unskilled labour during crises, however they always work under the direction of a trained supervisor. The mobilization, the training, the equipment, the protective gear, the specialized cleaning processes, and the specialized cleaning agents all come at a premium. Talk with your insurer to make sure that you have enough coverage for the emergency cleanup, the rebuild, and the contents.
