www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, January 9, 2015 | 8 Nanny Angel Network spreads wings in Halton by Abigail Cukier Special to the Beaver While receiving treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital for breast cancer, Audrey Guth saw many other patients with young children. Guth, who is founder of a nanny agency, had an idea she just couldn't get out of her head. "I saw the angst in their faces," she said. "Most of these women don't have the opportunity to have a nanny. It's such a luxury and they're the ones who need it the most." Guth, president of Diamond Personnel, gathered a group of friends and they decided to find a way to provide nanny services to women with cancer in the Greater Toronto Area. Founded in 2008, the Nanny Angel Network (NAN) provides free, in-home childcare to women with cancer so they can attend doctor's appointments, receive treatment or rest. NAN has helped more than 1,000 moms and children. "As women, we are the ones who hold everyone else together," said Guth, a mother of four children. "Then all of a sudden, we need care but are not open about letting people know what we need. With NAN, the women don't feel like they are taking advantage of family or friends. And some, don't even have family close by. Half are new immigrants." And now, thanks to the Oakville, Milton and District Real Estate Board (OMDREB), the Audrey Guth of the Nanny Angel Network speaks at the Oakville, Milton and District Real Estate Board AGM. | photo by Stacey Newman special to the Beaver Nanny Angel Network will be able to expand its services to the Halton Region. Each year, the incoming president of OMDREB selects a shelter-related organization to support during their term. The President's Charity receives donations of money, time and required items for that year. While driving one day, the board's 2015 president, Jeff Mahannah heard a documentary about the Nanny Angel Network on the radio and was immediately inspired to help. In December, the board announced it would donate an office at its Oakville location for use by the Nanny Angel Network's Angels to make appointments and store materials. It also pledged to raise $25,000 this year to support NAN. The first fundraiser will be a fashion show on Thursday, Feb. 26 at RattleSnake Point Golf Club. The fashions are by designer Debbie Glover of Studio 49. Tickets cost $120 and include a $50 gift certificate to Studio 49 and 10 raffle tickets. Tickets can be purchased at omdreb.on.ca or by calling 905-844-6491. "Going through cancer treatment is a really tough task for anyone," said Mahannah. "With children, it makes it that much tougher. And I couldn't imagine what it would be like if you were on your own or new to the country or living on social assistance or maybe all of the above." Guth called it a "privilege and an honour" to be helped by OMDREB. "My ultimate goal is to be out of business. But the fact is, cancer is affecting young women and we need to make sure this service is available beyond the GTA," she said. The Halton office will open after more nannies are trained. All nannies need one year of professional experience working with children, including social workers, nurses, early childhood educators or teachers or be studying a related field. Nannies receive training, including CPR and First Aid and a police screening. Anyone interested in applying can visit nannyangelnetwork.com. Guth said there is also a need for other volunteers, including inoffice support or fundraising. "We are trying to help these moms get better so they can raise their own children," she said. That's the goal."
