She loves watching his energy and enthusiasm as he runs and climbs. A grandmother to 10 grandchildren ranging in age from two years to 11 years, she cherishes every moment with all her grandkids. But they're an active bunch ... and keeping up is no small chore, especially for Groen. A smoker for 42 years. Groen has suffered with chronic bronchitis for years. As her disease progressed, breathing was no longer something she could take for granted. Her breathing became more laboured, she tired easily and she always seemed to be gasping for air. She found even the everyday activities of living were becoming a chore. Then a couple o f years ago. Groen was diagnosed with emphysema and admitted to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). During her brief hospital stay, she was referred into a special home oxygen program called CA1HR (Community Alliance of Integrated Home/Hospital Resources). CAIHR is a joint venture between the Respiratory Therapy Department of Halton Healthcare (which runs OTMH as well as Milton District Hospital) and Ludlow Medical. It provides patients at both hospitals and their communi ties with home and portable oxygen. Judy Gulyes, a Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner from the CAIHR program visited Groen in the hospital to introduce herself and to provide both reassurance and con tinuity o f care. After discussing Groen's emphysema and determining her activity levels, Gulyes developed a personal treatment plan for Groen and gave her a portable oxygen cylinder. Before Groen was discharged from the hospital, she knew how to monitor her condition and she felt comfortable oper ating her oxygen tank. "Patients are referred to the program by their doctors," explains Gulyes. "People who need home oxygen are gen erally those who have emphysema or chronic lung disease (often due to smoking). The program also helps improve the quality of life for palliative care patients or those awaiting a lung transplant." Groen said everything was delivered and set up by the time she got back home. "The oxygen machine that I fill up, my portable oxygen cylinder was there waiting for me, and Judy (Gulyes) checked on me the next day through a home visit to make sure that I felt comfortable with my new oxygen equipment. "She wanted to make sure, that my breathing was okay (See 'Respiratory' page 27) N e w Patients Welcome Emergencies 6 3 0 F ord D r i v e U n it 3 , O a k v i l l e 905 337-9606 - Fami ly Dental Clinic Sports Injuries · · · · · · · One to One Service Injury Assessment & Treatment Injury Management Counselling Functional, Effective Rehabilitation Programs Return-to-Sport Readiness Evaluations Injury Prevention Counselling Protective and Preventative Taping "A T T IV O Tra ining R o o m " O n -s ite Retail Store · Sports Braces and more... · Gift Certificates Available Let us help you accelerate your injury recovery time, enhance your sports performance and reduce your risk o f injury.
