Description
There have been many owners of the 200 acres of Lot 8, Concession 1 NDS, Township of Trafalgar South. The original grant was by the Crown to Mary Davidson in 1810. In 1825, the entire parcel was sold to John Smith. The property was transferred to Robert Smith in 1848. Smith promptly sold 66 2/3 acres in the southern part of Lot 8 to Alexander Proudfoot - this house is on the south part of Lot 8.

The property was then transferred to Frederick Wilkinson that same year, and in 1850, it was purchased by Samuel Snider. In 1852, the property was purchased by William P. Smith, who also purchased the remaining 133 1/3 acres in 1853 from his brothers, Demster and Francis Smith.

In 1853, Smith sold the 66 2/3 parcel in the south part of the lot to Andrew Orr. Meanwhile, the north part of Lot 8, consisting of 133 1/3 acres, was sold to William Sibbald in 1855.

In 1855, Andrew’s brother Joseph Orr purchased 30 acres of William Sibbald’s property in the southwest quarter of Lot 8. A year later, he purchased the remainder of the southeast part of Lot 8 from Andrew Orr. Joseph’s property now amounted to 96 2/3 acres.

The 1861 Census shows that Joseph Orr was a 58 year old farmer who was born in Ireland. He was married to Margaret, aged 52. Together, they had five children between the ages of 8 and 22: Letitia, William, Mary, Matthew and Ellen. The family lived in a one storey log dwelling - likely on Concession 10, Lot 7 as per the 1871 Census, with Lot 8 Conc. 1 NDS likely without a dwelling, perhaps only a barn as yet.

In 1874, Joseph sold the property (described in the Land Titles Abstract as 100 acres) to Anthonia E. Turner, widower.

We suspect that Joseph Orr built the house between 1871 and 1873, and sold it to widow Anthonia Turner in 1874. It has also been suggested that possibly her husband John Turner built the home on Joseph Orr's land, then Anthonia purchased it in 1874 after her husband's death.

When John and Anthonia Turner first came to Trafalgar Township, they lived on Lot 19. In 1874, records show Anthonia had a home on Lot 8 when applied for a mortgage.

A review of the 1877 Illustrated Historical Atlas of the County of Halton indicates that there was a farmhouse located within the study area (Figure 2). An orchard was planted west of the farmhouse; a creek ran between the house and the Dundas highway. Mrs. A. E. Turner is shown to have owned/occupied this part of Lot 8.

1881 records indicate that Mrs. Turner owned the property, while John McGowan was a tenant farmer.

She sold the 100 acre parcel to William Perkins in 1886. The 1891 Census shows that William Perkins was 43 years old, a farmer who resided with his wife Anna, age 38, in a two storey frame house with nine rooms.

The Perkins continued to reside here until 1909, at which time the property (more accurately described as 96 2/3 acres) was purchased by Herbert Brind.
