Halton Region is building the majority of the 4.3-kilometre outfall pipe under Third Line, which also includes an additional 2.1 kilometres offshore, to support the expansion of the treatment plant on North Service Road West. Regional Chair Gary Carr said the new infrastructure is part of their commitment to improving the quality of life for residents. "These projects will not only provide significant environmental benefits to Lake Ontario, they will also improve the safe handling and management of wastewater as our communities continue to grow," Carr said. The underground pipe will start carrying treated wastewater from the plant to the lake after its scheduled completion in 2017. In early December, the Region's contractor for the project, Strabag Inc., moved excavation equipment to the shaft site at the east end of Coronation Park. Approximately 0.04 square kilometres of the park is currently fenced off for the public's safety until May 2015, at which point Strabag will begin onshore tunneling. The Region is advising residents of anticipated noise, vibration and dust during the excavation. Locals can also expect increased truck traffic between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, restricted to Lakeshore Road West (from Coronation Park to Third Line) and on Third Line, north to the QEW.
