Yes, the hearing will be continue briefly next week to allow all the public interested parties a chance to com m ent on the deal, but barring a m ajor surprise, it appears an OMB hearing at this stage can be avoided. A nd that's good news for Oakville taxpayers. An educated guess Although everyone involved seems would peg the cost reluctant to discuss exact amounts, an of a lengthy 0MB educated guess w ould peg the cost o f a hearing in at least lengthy OM B hearing in at least the high six-figure departm ent -- and that's only the high six-figure for the Tow n's share o f the hearing. department. B esides the financial savings involved, the deal contains several envi ronm ental initiatives which should strengthen the Tow n's control over developm ent growth in north O akville and within the existing urban envelope. Among these are: · $ 150,000 for the establishm ent o f an Oakville Foundation for Environm ental Initiatives; · developm ent o f a Healthy G reenspace Strategy for Public Lands to prom ote, maintain and enhance the long-term ecological health o f O akville's parks and open spaces; · establishm ent o f a task force to focus on urban redevelopm ent, intensification and revitalization in lands south o f Dundas Street; · developm ent o f an urban forestry plan focusing on lands south o f Dundas Street. Obviously, the com prom ise will not satisfy everyone 100 per cent. But from what w e've seen, an agreem ent has been reached that everyone involved can at least live with. No doubt, there will be future disagreem ents and battles fought by opponents during different stages o f the planning process. But at least for now, O akville can proceed to the next step with out a lengthy legal battle blocking the way. And while opposing sides will probably each be claim ing vic tory over the settlem ent, we believe the real winners are the resi dents o f Oakville. P A G E SO FT H EP A S T 50 years ago An application from Toronto's Walkover Coal Co. to lease 2.5 acres on the west side of Sixteen Mile Creek, last Friday evening set Town Council to pondering the commercial possibilities of the har bour area. The coal firm proposed building a dock on the site, which would be used for fuel storage. A company spokesman told council the firm had sold coal to Ford-Oakville on the basis of delivery here by boat. "Already, our delivery of Ford coal here has dropped rail rates from $1.85 to $1.43 a ton. We're very interested in competing for this substantial business, and I think you'd find a commercial dock would offer tremendous possibilities to Oakville. - Oakville-TVafalgar Journal, Aug. 6,1953 40 years ago Oakville council last night moved a step towards ending pollution of streams within the town limits, and the lake at its front, when it approved four rec ommendations made by the Ontario Water Resources Commission as a result of its recently concluded water pollution survey of the town. The Commission recommended that the water quality and effluent objectives prescribed in its report be observed in the development of remedial and pollution-preventive measures now underway in Oakville; that all sewer outfalls in the town be recorded, and samples taken where a pollution dis charge have been indicated or suspected of dis charging to the lake or contributing watercourses; that selection, construction and operation of sanitary landfill sites with possible drainage into local waters be carried out in a manner to prevent them from dis charging polluted material into the watercourses; and that the town advise the Ontario Water Resources Commission of any changes made affect ing the sewer outlets, discharges and similar condi tions.
