Lights share spirit with many 'Tis the season when many holiday lighting displays shine brightly in many neighbourhoods. One of the more spectacular displays in town is at Jose Goncalves' family homestead on Sixth Line (south of Upper Middle Road). The display encompasses the entire front of the house and its yard and is a labour of love for Goncalves, who readily admits he loves Christmas. He's been setting up and adding to the lights for the past 20 years. The display features thousands of bulbs on hundreds of strings, augmented by numerous reindeer, stars and Santa ornaments. Goncalves spends countless hours each year setting up the lights, and checking each bulb and string, leading up to the annual lighting in early December. The display not only illuminates the night sky with the holiday spirit, it is a fundraiser for both the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, with a donation box set up out front for those wishing to contribute. The two charities are near and dear to Goncalves' heart, with his daughter having stayed at SickKids in her youth and he being a heart triple bypass survivor.
