Tel: (905) 845-6601, ext. 3034, email Location - The subject Coronation Park East and Bronte Beach Park both closed for 49 days last summer due to the presence of harmful bacteria. But they weren't the worst of the beaches in Halton. Boathouse Beach in Halton Hills was the dirtiest of the seven beaches in the region last summer, and the main culprit? Geese, duck and seagull excrement, according to a Halton health department report released last week. The beach was closed for 63 days -- the highest closure rate among the beach es in Halton -- between mid-June and September. That meant it was only safe for swimming for about three out o f every 10 days. The problem was Boathouse became the waste ground of countless waterfowl, causing high levels of E. coli. The presence of the bacteria, found in the intestinal tract of warm-blooded ani mals. forces Halton's health department to close a beach until E. coli has cleared. "Every time we took a sample there, a lot o f waterfowl was there," Dave Stronach, a senior advisor with Halton's heath protection services, said o f Boathouse. He authored an information report released to the Region's health and social services committee. It documented week ly results last year for E. coli among the seven major beaches. They included: · Coronation Park West closed for 35 days. · Beachway Park in Burlington closed for 35 days. · Old Beach in Halton Hills closed for 28 days. · Kelso Conservation Area beach in Milton didn't close all summer. Other municipalities, like Toronto and Hamilton, also experience beach closures in the summer due to E. coli, so Halton certainly isn't alone. Stronach said there are a number of factors determining why a beach closes, but three main problems in Halton appear to be waterfowl waste, storm sewer out falls and pollution from deep within Lake Ontario. In the Oakville beaches, mostly used for recreational water activities like boat ing, a combination of the three con tributed to high E. coli counts. In Burlington. Stronach said there is no waterfowl problem and there is no storm sewer outfall nearby. He seems to think that Lake Ontario - widely consid ered a polluted body of water - has some thing to do with it, though no definitive analysis has been undertaken. "We've noticed, especially at Beachway, that when the wave action is heavy and towards the beach, w e're going to get higher counts (of E. coli)," Stronach said. In Milton, Kelso has no waterfowl issue after it installed over-head netting six years ago to prevent birds from cir cling the beach. It also has no sewage out fall nearby and no linkage to Lake Ontario and the absence of the two likely helped Kelso stay clean. But Stronach made it clear there is no single primary cause for beach pollution, which makes it difficult to source out the specific problem and cure it. "With any of these things, if we're talking about birds or Lake Ontario, they may be a part of the puzzle but I don't think it's all of it," he said. "I think it's more complicated than saying it's just one thing."
