B2 - T h e O a k ville Beaver, Wednesday November 1 0 , 2 0 0 4 Cancer Society needs more volunteer drivers By Melanie Cummings S P E C IA L T O T H E B E A V E R Chauffeuring cancer patients to their medical appointments is a "privilege" in Dawn Wanless' view. And he's hoping at least 10 drivers will see to his way o f thinking after reading this article. The Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society urgently needs that many volunteer drivers, and more to ensure all local cancer victims travel stress-free to hospitals, clinics and doc tors' offices. The unit has experienced a drop lately due to snowbirds heading south and illnesses among its core o f seniors who are the majority of its volunteer drivers. At this time of year the base of 25 volunteer drivers fluctuates heavily, said Joan Gibb, president of the unit. For the past 22 years Wanless has taxied cancer sufferers up and down the highway, from Hamilton, to Kitchener, to Toronto, and in and around town. He has made many friendships on route too. "Driving for the cancer society is the most satisfying and rewarding activity that I've done because it simply makes lives better and the community better," said Wanless. As a newly retired teacher he was looking for something to fill his time. Now that he is on his own, he'd be lost without the Cancer Society work, he said. "I am acutely aware that I am one of the fortunate ones and that my passen gers are truly the courageous ones." Three times a week for about four to six hours per day, Wanless is the com forting face, warm handshake and friendly voice that leads patients on their way to, and back home from, their medical appointments. There is a fratemity-sorority among drivers when they meet up at the vari ous destinations. He wiles away the wait time with his fellow volunteers who come from all parts o f the province. "I enjoy listening to their stories, playing cribb.age with them or just qui etly reading." And he enjoys the flexibility and camaraderie among the staff and volun teers who run the Oakville Unit o f the Cancer Society. On the practical side, the cancer society covers Wanless' fuel costs with a monthly allowance and any parking fees. Drivers have the freedom to choose which days and what times they prefer to drive each week, as well as the treat ment centre to which they prefer to travel. Oakville's volunteer Cancer Society drivers average about 300 - 350 trips per month, and this past year, they've driven more than 110,000 kilometres to iU ? 189L » '\ ? i t r · i . t f w y d /, 4 _ 4 wi . * I S *2 * . -V , k /f - £ //i 'w f r i r Ashlea Wessel · Special to the Beaver Dawn W anless, a volunteer d riv e r with the O akville Unit of the C an ad ian C an cer Society for 22 years, encourages oth ers to help drive cancer p atien ts to m edical appointm ents.
