Cap and Gown fundraiser will serve up scholarships to needy students The May Court Club of Oakville is hosting its annual Cap and Gown Scholarship fundraising dinner to help high school students further their education. The local, volunteer-run registered charity awards scholarships to students in serious financial need and who give back to their community through volunteer work. The scholarship funds are sent directly to the college or university where the student will attend. Since 1994, the May Court Club of Oakville has awarded more than 300 local students from the public and Catholic school boards with more than $350,000 in scholarships towards their post-secondary education. The May Court Club of Oakville was established in 1956 and is a volunteer women's organization that gives service to and raises funds for the community. This year's fundraiser will take place on Thursday, Feb. 12 at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre, 2340 Ontario St. Cocktails and a cash bar are available at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dinner, entertainment and a silent auction. Generally speaking, however, a diagnosis is not necessary to be found "totally disabled" and entitled to monthly disability benefits. An individual's restrictions and limitations and the impact that these have on one's ability to function in the workplace are the factors normally considered by insurers in the assessment of a claim. Restrictions and limitations are not only physical, they can be mental or psychological as well. The lack of a diagnosis should not prevent an individual from receiving a disability benefit. A definitive diagnosis can sometimes take years. If a disability claim is improperly denied, it should be appealed immediately. In support of any appeal, disability claimants should ask their treating physician(s) to provide a detailed medical report to the insurer setting out the disabling symptoms and the affect that these have upon ones functioning and ability to work.
