New headquarters a `must-have': Halton police chief by Bob Mitchell Special to the Beaver 3 | Friday, January 23, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A new Halton Regional Police Service headquarters is a "must have" -- not a "nice to have" facility, Police Chief Steven Tanner told Halton Region's Finance and Administration Committee members last week. The existing police headquarters attached to the Regional Centre on Bronte Road doesn't meet the long-term needs of policing but the proposed new $65-million headquarters will and is expected to serve policing needs in Halton until at least 2042, Tanner said. "The new headquarters will include a number of critical aspects that (are) required in a present day or a future police facility, including, but not limited to, up-to-date firearms and training facilities...and secured areas for our forensic and tactical and rescue unit," Tanner said. "I firmly believe that approval of this facility best meets the needs of this police service, Halton and its citizens from a long-term cost perspective." Despite a general acknowledgment that a new headquarters is needed, committee members last Thursday deferred recommending the expenditure to council until they receive more information regarding how the police exit from its existing facility will affect Regional needs for the space. Detailed architectural work costing $3 million was commenced last year -- and now completed -- for construction to begin in 2015 with the building to be up and running by the middle of 2017, Tanner said. Most specialized units such as homicide, intelligence, identification and drug units are now located at other police divisions, including the relatively-new 20 Division in Oakville on Dundas St. W. near Trafalgar Rd. But these units plus administration, property and evidence storage, and other specialized units will all be located under one roof in the building planned on Region-owned property immediately south of the existing Children's Safety Village. Once the police exit its existing headquarters the former police space will likely be used to accommodate the ever-expanding Regional services needs. see Debate on p.10 STATE OF THEART ART DENTAL DENTAL IMPLANTS STATE OF THE IMPLANTS rePLace YOur Missing teeth With the best OPtiOn aVaiLabLe Available Hours: Mon. - Fri. 7am - Midnight · Saturday 10am - 4pm Sore Feet, Sports Injury, Painful Ingrown Toenails?
