C6 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 28, 2002 Girls' soccer teams busy in tourney, league action UNDER-10 GIRLS ALL STAR The Oakville Diamondbacks girls' under-10 all-star soccer team finished its season in style, beating the St. Catharines Jets 1-0 earlier this month in the Oakville tournament final. Melissa Junior, voted tournament MVP, scored the winning the goal on a superb penalty kick in the game's clos ing minutes. The D-Backs delivered an exciting game with forwards Marissa Trauzzi, Lauren Crawford and Elaine Birkbeck giving the St. Catharines' defense anx ious moments with their aggressive rushes on the goal. The Diamondbacks defenders Frances Ratelle, Jessica Yee, Stephanie Bengle and Christina Lyn effectively shut down the Jets' offense. Oakville's Melissa Junior, Lauren Prolas and Carissa Quint provided out standing midfield support throughout the game. Goaltender Stephanie Pringle, who faced two St. Catharines' penalty shots in the first half, was solid in the net. Brilliant efforts by Meghan Borthwick, Stacey Cusan, Alexandra Edgar, Esen Gayret, Sany Guest, Anjali Langford, Jessica Reynolds and Rebecca Shutt completed Oakville's championship performance. In the semifinal game, the Diamondbacks stunned Oshawa when Melissa Junior scored in the first minute of play. Lauren Crawford closed the book on the outmatched Oshawa side with another goal less than 10 minutes later. Oakville survived two sluggish 0-0 ties against North Mississauga and Flamborough and a default win over a no-show Welland team. UNDER-11 GIRLS The Oakville Flames girls under-11 all star soccer team exploded to win the Mississauga Soccer Club Tournament, extending the team's streak of appear ances in tournament finals to four. The Flames won all three of their preliminary games, getting by Bolton (2-0), Mississauga (6-0) and Whitby (2- Angels include: Stephanie Bogias, Rachael Lyon, Kelsey Filip, Maya 0). The final was a rematch of an earlier Baluschak, Sarah Melanson, Julie contest with Whitby. Keeper Taryn McKenna made some key saves to preserve the victory. For the second year in a row, the Phantoms will meet the Burlington Explosion in the final. Last year, Oakville emerged victorious with a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win in extra time. In League action, the Phantoms recorded their 13th victory in as many games blanking Dixie 5-0. Karly Dagys had two goals to lead the attack while Ulbikas, Uremovich and Kelsey Young added singles. McKenna picked up the shutout, her ninth of the season. Oakville Fusion boys under-10 soc cer team was looking for a challenge and they found it against the Mississauga Falcons in the Oakville Regional AllStar Tournament. Mississauga was the only side the Fusion couldn't defeat and the team set tled for silver in the tournament. In the preliminary round, the Fusion beat Merriton Magic 6-1, then beat Pickering Dominion 8-1. In Game 3, however, Fusion was beaten 2-0 by Mississauga. In a semifinal Fusion can't handle Falcons U12 Gunners win, U14 Bulldogs reach final in Oakville boys' soccer tournament play match Oakville beat Pickering 8-0. The final pitted Oakville and Mississauga against each other again. The teams traded goals during regula tion time and two overtime periods decided nothing so the teams lined up for penalty kicks. The Falcons potted four kicks to beat Oakville and nab the toumey title. The team also finished second in a tournament in Niagara Falls. Fusion went undefeated in the prelim inary round but lost to Dixie in the final. UNDER-12 BOYS The Oakville Gunners under-12 boys' all-star soccer team went unde feated to win the A.C. Douglas Select tournament this month in Niagara Falls. A 5-2 win over Dixie in the final completed the perfect toumey for the team. The Gunners opened play by down ing Shelboume 8-0, with three goals from the foot of Dylan Husar and sin gles by Dean Maimonis, Nelson Doleman, Steven Guzzo, Alex Fedurco and a penalty kick strike from goalie Glen MacDonald. In Game 2, Oakville beat Niagara Falls 2-0. Ryan French and Husar pot ted goals; MacDonald -earned another shutout in net. Doleman scored twice, with Guzzo and Patrick Caims striking once each to lead the side to a 4-0 win over Welland in Game 3 and set up a semifinal against Niagara Falls Select. Husar and Doleman potted goals in the game to lead the team to the final. Midfielder Nick Van Gemert scored first in the final with a strike from inside the 18-yard box and added a second minutes later. Husar set up Guzzo for the team's third goal before halftime. Dixie scored twice to get within a goal in the second half but Guzzo scored again and Femandex potted an insurance marker. UNDER-14 BOYS ALL STAR The Oakville Bulldogs boys' under14 all star team reached the semifinals at the John Ruddy tournament in Guelph. The team earned three wins in pre liminary play. They beat Northwest Allstars 3-1 on goals by Dario Jaklin, Garrett Clark and Sean Donald. Bulldogs' goalie Leo Marques earned the shutout. Jaklin scored early in the first half against Niagara Storm in Game 2, fol lowed by goals from Luca Nicastro and Stefano Pecora. Niagara scored once in the second half but Oakville went on to win 2-1. Game 3 pitted Oakville against the host team, Guelph Royals. In that game, Jaklin potted three more goals, while teammates Pecora and David Brown added singles to lead the team to 5-0 win. Unfortunately, the success of the pre liminary round didn't carry over in the playoffs as the Bulldogs were eliminat ed when they faced Niagara again in the semifinal and lost 3-1. The team beat Byron 3-1 in final on goals by Kaiti Vincent, Alexandra Lyn and Kristina Zucchiatti. Goalie Marla Campbell played well in net. The Strikers got to the final by shut ting-out Chatham 3-0 in a semifinal match. Caroline Davies scored two and Melissa Provost added a single. Earlier in the quarter-final, Oakville hammered Norwest Energy 6-0. Zucchiatti, Vincent, Provost, Rachel Duban, Gillian Wetherald and Emily Frost scored. The Strikers beat Petrolia (3-0), Byron (2-0) and West Middlesex (1-0) in the preliminary round. Zucchiatti led that round in scoring with four goals, while Provost and Duban scored one each.
