www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, January 30, 2015 | 14 Halton police seek senior volunteers... and helped with Toys for Tots Halton Regional Police's Senior and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) and Halton Seniors Helpline are looking for volunteers from Oakville and Burlington. Those interested in joining need to be aged 50 years or older, and be caring, patient and nonjudgmental with good listening skills and having computer knowledge. Volunteers can help police by educating the community about crimes targeting seniors through community outreach, building relationships with local agencies and faith groups through information presentations, and attending special events and displays. The commitment is 60 hours of volunteer time per calendar year. Applicants must undergo a police records check. The 2014 Toys for Tots campaign spearheaded by Halton Regional Police collected more than $226,800 worth of toys, gift cards, cash and food donations. The donations benefitted more than 4,000 Halton families. In the last four years, the program has raised more than $1,167,995 through the support of citizens, businesses, schools and teams. Halton police's community partners in the annual endeavour are the Minor Oaks Hockey Association and the Burlington Lions Optimist Minor Hockey Association, who collectively raised more than $55,000 in 2014. In 2014, civilian and uniform members of Halton police again contributed their own time and funds to assist in the campaign. Members collected more than $47,000 in cash and toys at Canadian Tire locations and donated more than $3,500 through individual fundraisers and a gift card challenge. Other community partners making significant contributions included Halton Catholic and public elementary schools, Canadian Tire, St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School in Oakville, TD/Canada Trust, Mandarin Restaurant, Halton Honda, Eastside Auto and the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation.
