The quintet were among those who scored top marks in Ontario and Québec on their Royal Conservatory examinations and received their medals earlier this month at a public ceremony at the Telus Centre for Performance and Learning's Koerner Hall in Toronto. The recipients follow: · Daniel Johnson, 15, Grade 1 trumpet, teacher: Sladjan Antic; · Harry Kevin Lau, 17, Grade 9 organ, teacher: Brent Fifield; · Eric Mezgec, 16, Grade 3 guitar, teacher Warren Nicholson; · Vienna Micallef del Mastro, 10, preparatory voice, teacher: Linda Fletcher; · Sheanna Wiransinghe, 14, Grade 4 piano, teacher: Ruta Vivade. Regional gold medals are awarded each academic year (Sept. 1-Aug. 31) to Royal Conservatory examination candidates in Preparatory A and B and Grades 1-10 who achieve the highest mark in their respective province or designated region. Eligible candidates must score at least 80 per cent on their practical examination and must have completed the co-requisite theory examinations for their respective grade and discipline. The medal ceremonies are held annually in cities across Canada to recognize students' achievements and acknowledge the contributions of their teachers. The Royal Conservatory of Music is one of the largest and most respected music and arts education institutions in the world. The group show, Only Abstract, features a selection of abstract works from the gallery's artists.
