Ryan, a Grade 8 student at W. H. Morden Public School, was recovering in hospital after suffering a fracture to his arm during a practice with his hockey team Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Ryan is captain for the Oakville Flyers, a minor bantam house league squad, and has been playing hockey since he was seven years old. During a drill, he collided with a teammate and the boards. Oakville Fire responded to the medical emergency, along with paramedics. Capt. John Lippert helped assess Ryan and talked to him while his arm was being placed into a splint. Coincidentally, Lippert happened to be one of the crew members visiting the floor Ryan was on when local firefighters made their annual Christmas rounds at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Wednesday, Dec. 17. Each year, the firefighters, along with Santa Claus, deliver items gathered in the Oakville Professional Firefighters Association's annual Toy Drive. They also give out candy canes to help brighten the day of children, other patients and staff. Ryan said it was a nice surprise to see Lippert and took advantage of the opportunity to thank him. The Oakville Fire captain said he was glad to see Ryan resting and recovering comfortably. "It was absolutely incredible, the coincidence," said Ruth Nowlan, Ryan's mom. "We received such support from everyone involved the firefighters, paramedics, everyone. That visit was such a bright spot in an otherwise dark time." Nowlan said her son is now out of hospital, convalescing at home and doctors have told her they expect Ryan to make a full recovery.
