www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 25, 2014 | 58 Artscene The Halton Jazz Singers had a near sellout for its inaugural public ticketed concert last Thursday. The new jazz vocal group held its holiday concert at the Black Box Theatre at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd. The family-friendly event featured soloist Eran Rozen. The Burlington resident is an accomplished pianist and vocalist currently pursuing his masters of music in piano performance and pedagogy at Memorial University in St. John's, N.L. Rozen has performed with Toronto-based groups including Common Thread Community Choir, Victoria College Choir and the MacMillan Singers of the University of Toronto. "I was introduced to Halton Jazz Singers in the spring of 2014 through the wonders of online communication, and became their official accompanist and a tenor," said Rozen. "Although I was unable to perform once my second and final academic year kicked in, I am so pleased to be returning this Christmas in yet another wonderful, heartwarming collaboration with the Halton Jazz Singers." On the piano, Rozen performed Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G Minor and a Franz Liszt Petrarcarchan Sonnet, among other selections. Rozen joined the singers for their vocal jazz Christmas music sets, accompanied by Alan Kulka on guitar. Also featured at the concert was Saman Shahi, who sang a mixture of art and contemporary songs. "We are excited to be bringing jazz music to Oakville and area," said Darcea Hiltz, Halton Jazz Singers founder, music director and Oakville resident. "We're aiming to bring our show to as many Halton residents as can be seated in the Black Box Theatre and we hope that our friends and neighbours will come out to hear us." Those who attended heard holiday jazz numbers such as: Swingin at Santa's Place, Jingle Bells, Zat You Santa Claus and A Caribbean Noel, and had a visit from Santa Claus himself too.
