Police suspect foul play in Ozollapa's disappearance by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Thursday, December 25, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A Burlington man who hasn't been heard from by friends and family since he left his Oakville work site nearly three months ago, may be the victim of foul play, says the Halton police homicide squad. Janis Ozollapa was last seen on the afternoon of Sept. 30, when he left a work site at a northwest Oakville home, where he was doing general contract renovations. The father of a young daughter, and two adult children in Latvia, never returned home that evening, causing his wife Patricia Harris to panic. Last Friday, Det.-Sgt. John Mans of the Halton police homicide squad said there are six investigators assigned to the case fulltime and the 50-year-old's disappearance is being treated as suspicious. "We can't help but to suspect, at this stage, foul play -- we're proceeding on those grounds," Mans told the Oakville Beaver. "Looking at all the analytical work with respect to the phone data, financial data that we've been able to get our hands on, the witness statements that we've taken... there's nothing to indicate he's done this himself," said Mans. Police have even gone as far as to check log-in records for Ozollapa's email, and social media accounts -- his wife has described him as a "Facebook addict." Mans said there's been no activity on any accounts. On Oct. 10, Halton police received a tip from the public that the 50-year-old Ozollapa's black Chevrolet Avalanche, which they had been searching for, was parked in the rear lot of the Lighting Centre on Cross Avenue in Oakville. Video surveillance Video surveillance released to the public showed the pickup truck entering the lot at 5:30 a.m. the day after the last sighting of Ozollapa. An unidentified man can be seen walking quickly from the vehicle before starting to jog as he nears Cross Avenue -- directly across from the Oakville GO Station. Harris, however, told police, and the Beaver in a Nov. 5 interview, she doesn't believe the man on the blurry, dimly-lit security tape is her husband. "I don't believe it's him," she said. "He has a very distinct walk and he just never runs." Mans said the surveillance cameras at the GO parking lot had already been copied over by the time investigators found the truck. Police continue search for witnesses Police continue their appeal for three getting a hold of those people." A few weeks ago, investigators led cadaver dogs on a search along nearby Sixteen Mile Creek, as well as the area where Ozollapa's truck was found and in Burlington where he made his home. Ozollapa and Harris had moved to the city from Orangeville only six months prior to his disappearance. He had moved to Canada from Latvia six years earlier. A hockey fan Family and friends describe the missing man as being a fan of ice sports, such as hockey and curling. He had just returned from a trip to the U.S. to see a Buffalo Sabres game. Ozollapa was also very active in the Latvian community and spoke English with a heavy accent. Mans said there may be facts police are not aware of and encourages anyone with information, even if they feel it may be insignificant, to contact investigators. "We would prefer that anyone who thinks they have something, no matter how small it is, to contact us and allow us to add that to the rest of the pieces we have," Mans said. "It may seem insignificant to them, but it may be the last piece of the puzzle we need to provide us with the right answer and the right direction." Janis Ozollapa witnesses -- the driver of a taxicab, motorcycle and pickup truck -- whose vehicles are all seen on the security tape, driving on Cross Avenue as the unknown man makes his way to the street. Police also organized a spot check around the same time of morning that the truck was left in the parking lot, hoping to speak with motorists who take the route daily on their way to work. "We haven't let up since we became involved," Mans said.
