Social campaign aims to raise awareness The Canadian Congenital Heart Alliance (CCHA) is putting on a social media campaign to raise awareness of lifelong heart conditions. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect, affecting one in every 100 children born in Canada, according to the CCHA. That's why the non-profit, volunteer-run, charitable organization is challenging Canadians to find their one in 100 friend, family or colleague affected by CHD and share their story on Facebook (www.facebook.com/CCHAforlife) or Twitter @CCHAforlife with the hashtag #my1in100. "It is not a condition that is `fixed', it requires lifelong treatment and fewer than one-third of Canadians living with CHD are getting recommended care." According to the CCHA, the number of Canadians living with CHD surpasses many other longterm, well-recognized diseases by more than 250 per cent, but it remains one of the least-funded of all major organizations, with only $722,000 in annual funding. Feb. 7-14 was CHD Awareness Week, while February is Heart Awareness Month. Funding to the CCHA goes towards education for patients and the medical community; lifelong, specialized medical care and patient support; and further research focused on adult CHD treatments and long-term care.
