All provincial reps in Halton are advocating for a new courthouse continued from p.6 This wasn't my first visit to this courthouse. I spent many weeks there in 2007 during the trial of the man who struck and killed my husband, a long-serving OPP officer, while he was cycling on Tremaine Road. I knew then this physical building was insufficient in terms of supporting the victims going through arguably the most difficult time in their lives, nor the dedicated legal and policing professionals working to see justice served. When MPPs Flynn, Naidoo-Harris and I left our tour, we were strongly in agreement that this facility was completely inadequate to serve the needs of one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada. Building on the work Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott has started, we have all made the case to Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur, to Finance Minister Charles Sousa, and to their respective staff for a new courthouse for Halton. The Ministry of the Attorney General recognizes the need to address the facility challenges in Halton, and this remains a priority for them. The Milton courthouse is one of several across the province facing challenges -- some big, some little. Building a new courthouse is an expensive endeavor -- much more than, for instance, renovations or upgrades to an existing building -- and for that reason, I ask for patience. Our government is working with partners in infrastructure and justice to advocate for a new court facility. With four local MPPs championing this, Halton residents should rest assured the Milton courthouse and the needs of Halton are a priority for the government.
