Lighthouse Program gets new defibrillator The Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children is making room for a new automated external defibrillator (AED) at its Wilson Street home, thanks to the generosity of the Halton Civitan Club. An AED helps reset the heartbeat after a cardiac arrest. When it is used quickly, and together with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), it can help keep a cardiac arrest victim alive until emergency help arrives. "On any given night when a group is running, there can be as many as 30 children and adults in our building. As well, the families who visit the Lighthouse are grieving, and, as a result, are often under increased stress," said Candace Ray, Lighthouse program director. "Having an AED close by provides our families, facilitators and staff with the comfort of knowing that should there be a medical emergency, we will be able to respond appropriately." Lighthouse staff and facilitators have received AED training from a certified instructor. The Halton Civitan Club, a not-for-profit volunteer organization, had asked the Lighthouse for a wish list and was alerted to their need for a defibrillator. The Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children provides support groups for children, youth and their families following a death in the immediate family. It is supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the United Ways of Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills.
